As Dairy Month comes to a close, for the Tenley family, dairy farming is more than a seasonal celebration, it’s a way of life. Cedar County Farm Bureau Board Member Lakaya Tenley and her husband, Tanner, own and operate a dairy just outside of Mechanicsville, where they continue to grow their passion for agriculture and community connection.
Now one year into their MilkHouse Market journey, the Tenley's have transformed their vision into reality. With the support of the Iowa Farm Bureau’s Grow Your Future Award, where they earned the first place prize, they have successfully expanded their direct-to-consumer offerings. When asked what’s next, Lakaya shared her excitement about continued growth. “We’re thrilled to see how the market and our delivery routes are expanding,” she said. “We’re also strongly considering hosting farm-to-table dinners this fall to enhance the direct to consumer experience.”
The Tenleys’ Jersey herd produces an impressive 19,000 gallons of milk each year, making it no surprise that Lakaya’s favorite dairy product is fresh whole milk. “It’s such a versatile product that can serve your family in so many ways,” she shared.
In addition to fresh milk, MilkHouse Market offers a variety of locally sourced meats, cheeses, and ice cream. To learn more about the Tenley farm and follow their journey, be sure to find them on Facebook!

The scholarship committee awarded six scholarships this year. Each student completed a lengthy application and provided two letters of reference. Applicants were selected based on academic standing, leadership experience, civic involvement, and their commitment to rural Iowa and the agricultural community. Each student participated in a brief interview with our scholarship committee, which included Kaitlin Walton, Dustin Marolf, Noah Coppess and Lakaya Tenley.

Our final recipient is Zoe Holstein, the daughter of Ross and Jill Holstein of Tipton. She will be studying Marketing at Kirkwood. When asked, "Specifically indicate if (and why) you have plans to come back to Iowa and/or your community. What do those plans include?” Zoe responded: “I want to stay in Iowa because with my career in marketing I want to bring attention to Iowa. People usually just brush past us. With the help of marketing and social media, I can help boost the publicity of Iowa and all it has to offer. I specifically want to work for a sports team and help boost them while also showing that Iowa could have a major sports team here because we are just as deserving as other big states. Putting Iowa on the map with a major sports team would bring lots of attention to us. If you look at all that college sports have done for Iowa, a major league sport would do great here. Putting a major league sports team here, and having it help publicize Iowa, will help farmers because with a major sports team comes ads and we can use those ads to promote places in Iowa like is done with college sports. I also hope to help put more Iowa colleges on the map because every school is good at something and deserves to be noticed like all the big colleges in Iowa. College sports have helped put Iowa on the map.”

Congratulations, Zoe!
