Sixty-Eight Students from Upper Miami Valley Heading for State Science Day

One hundred-forty-six students from Miami, Darke, Shelby and Champaign Counties competed in the Ohio Academy of Science Upper Miami Valley (UMV) Regional Science Day, held at Edison State Community College, Piqua, Ohio on Saturday, March 8, 2025. Students exhibited projects in science, technology, engineering and mathematics which they worked on from September through February of this year. The Science Day (Fair) program has been in Ohio since 1949. Students who complete and present a science or engineering project at a local science fair in their school, or at a county event, may qualify to compete at the Regional level.

This was the 10th year for the event at Edison State Community College. Organizers included area educators, STEM professionals and business representatives. About $8,000 was distributed in awards, provided by area sponsors including many businesses and individuals interested in supporting STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). The students were accompanied by many parents, teachers and guests on Saturday, in a tremendous show of support of the students’ efforts.

All of the projects receiving superior ratings at the Upper Miami Valley Regional Science Day will proceed to the State Science Day held in April.

On Thursday, February 27, 2025, the 11th Annual Darke County Science Day was held at Greenville High School
for Darke County students, grades 5-12. Thirty-three students from Arcanum, DeColores Montessori, Franklin-Monroe and Tri-village schools completed science research projects and presented their findings to area professionals, researchers, and educators.

This event offered students a venue that promotes the development of creative thinking, research and writing
skills and career motivation toward the sciences, all in one program. Project topics may be in biology, chemistry, botany,
space, earth sciences, computers, zoology, microbiology, biochemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, medicine, health and behavioral social science.

Sixteen students received the highest rating of “Superior”. They were: from Arcanum MS - Jean Pitman, Tim Johnson,
Chloe Rieman, Micah, Matheson; from DeColores Montessori – Caleb Miller, Jonathan Conway, Nalayna Miley, Tara
Seger, Christina Conklin, Conner Feldner, Ben Weigand; from Tri-village – Ezra Gutierrez, Cora Gutierrez, Colton
Clevenger, Taytum Gray, Reggie Osborne. These students will go to the Regional Science Day held at Edison State
Community College in Piqua on Saturday, March 8 th .
Event sponsors donated awards and event expense funds in an amount totaling $2,200. Sponsors included: BASF
Corporation (Title Sponsor), Wayne Health Care, Cargill, Whirlpool, Garmann Miller Architects, Boonshoft Museum of
Discovery and the McMurry Family. Area professionals and community members volunteered to judge the projects,
aided by Darke County science teachers.

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, the 11 th Annual Miami County Science Day was held at
Tippecanoe High School for students in grades 5-12. This event offered students a venue that
promotes the development of creative thinking, research and writing skills and career motivation
toward the sciences, all in one program. Seventy-seven students from Tipp City, Miami East,
Covington, Piqua, Milton-Union and the Upper Valley Career Center, completed and exhibited
projects in animal Science, plant science, chemistry, environmental sciences, computers,
microbiology, energy, physics, engineering, mathematics, medicine & health and behavioral &
social sciences.

Ninety-one students from Urbana Senior High School, Mechanicsburg Middle School and Graham Middle School and Elementary completed science research projects and presented their findings to area professionals, researchers, and educators.
This event offered students a venue that promotes the development of creative thinking, research and writing skills and career motivation toward the sciences, all in one program. Project topics may be in biology, chemistry, botany, space & earth sciences, computers, zoology,
microbiology, biochemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, medicine & health and
behavioral & social science.

Congratulations to all of the student participants and thank you to the teachers and parents for all of their support through this valuable process!

On Thursday, February 06, 2025, the Shelby County Science Day was held at Anna Local High School for Shelby County students, grades 5-12. Fifty-one students from Anna High School and Jackson Center Schools completed science research projects and presented their findings to area professionals, researchers, and educators.

This event offered students a venue that promotes the development of creative thinking, research and writing skills and career motivation toward the sciences, all in one program. Project topics may be in biology, chemistry, botany, space & earth sciences, computers, zoology, microbiology, biochemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, medicine & health and behavioral & social science.
