The Industrial Robotics class has been working on a class project on wind tunnels through a competition sponsored by the University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics. Today, the class had an opportunity to have a Microsoft Teams meeting with Jacob Caldwell, a member of the Bethel-MVCTC STEM Program’s advisory committee. Jacob is a graduate student at the Institute of Flow Physics and Control at the University of Notre Dame. He spoke on his background in engineering and his current wind tunnel projects and research at Notre Dame, including the world’s first Large Mach 10 Quiet Wind Tunnel. Students were also able to ask questions of Mr. Caldwell regarding their own wind tunnel research and design. We appreciate Mr. Caldwell’s time today and look forward to speaking with him again as we continue to research, build, and test our own wind tunnels in class!

Thanks to the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce for a great day of manufacturing tours! We started the day at Hobart Institute of Welding, visited ARC Abrasives, toured Collins Aerospace, and toured Freudenberg. It’s a great opportunity to learn about careers in engineering and manufacturing and to learn more about these companies and what they produce. Thanks to Mrs. Weideman for organizing our trip! And thanks to the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce for supplying lunch!

Brush up on your soldering skills this summer!

🥽Soldering Simplified: First time soldering? Maybe you need a refresher or some practice? In this program, patrons can explore soldering electronics in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere. Each date, we will be soldering a different kit to help those who have soldered practice and those who haven't get started. For teens (grades 6-12) and adults.

The UAS class completed their Drone Video project, where they were challenged to create a video of Bethel Local Schools using 10 or more photos or videos captured with the DJI drones during class. Today we had a send off lunch for this awesome group of kids. 9 of 18 are going to CTC next year. One is graduating. The majority of them have been in the STEM program since 7th grade. They are an all around great class. They work hard, all get along with each other, and are fun kids. Best of luck to everyone going to CTC. You will be missed! I better see the rest of you back in class next year!

8th graders are learning why communication is important. On Monday, students built a figure using a minimum of 10 Legos and had to write instructions for someone else to follow. Today, they’re trying to follow someone else’s instructions to build the figure. Next week, they will start learning how to code so their direction writing skills will be very important as they learn to code robots.

Wow! The UAS class had an amazing day at The Ohio State University! First up, we toured the OSU airport. We sat in a classroom (that overlooks the runway), learned about history of aviation at OSU, toured the airport, saw the flight simulators, reviewed METAR reading, and went out into the field to check out an airplane. Next, we stopped at Waterman Farm for a Wingtra flight demonstration. Last, we went to campus for a walking tour. We visited The Shoe, saw some DoorDash delivery robots, visited the drone lab, went to the mechanical engineering building where we saw different designs of aircraft engines (from the 1940s), visited the main library, and ended at mirror lake. Huge thank you to the OSU faculty, Brian, Paul, and Mark for organizing our visit today and pulling out all the stops for us! We appreciate their time and support of our program! Go Bucks!
