Learned Excellence for Athletes is the sports consulting arm of Dr. Abrams' practice where he is the President and Primary Sport Psychologist. Based in New Jersey, but consulting both locally and nationally, Mitch Abrams has been helping athletes reach their potential for over ten years. Whether it is the treatment of a emotional problem they may be struggling with or assisting them with removing

the mental obstacle that interferes with peak performance, he takes a hands on, directive approach geared to solve problems as soon as possible.

«—BY CLICKING ON THE COVER OF MY BOOK TO THE LEFT, YOU WILL BE TAKEN TO A SITE WHERE YOU CAN ORDER IT. Athletes tend to be successful, competitive, driven people. They also are very competent people, so the basic assumption that Dr. Abrams takes is that if the problem was easy to solve, the athlete would have already mastered it. The goal of any treatment, whether for clinical issues or enhancing performance, is to end treatment; to return the athlete to success in sport and life. Dr. Abrams will empower the athlete to build on their already-existing toolbox, so that they are self-sufficient to reach their goals. He provides services for both performance enhancement and treatment of emotional problems. Having developed a comprehensive anger management program for athletes, he has lectured nationally on the topic of anger and violence in sports. Dr. Abrams believes that the idea that athletes are more violent than their non-athlete counterparts is a MYTH! It is a myth that has sprung from the transgression of a very small percentage of athletes, the tremendous media attention athletes receive when they do cross "the line", and the selective inattention to the ubiquity of societal violence. Because some hold the perspective that athletes are more violent, athletes need to be even better at controlling their emotions. Before an incident can even be corroborated, it will be highlighting the sports news. Therefore, athletes are At Risk because of two things:
The illusion of health - Because athletes tend to be physically healthy and popular, there is the assumption that they are psychologically healthy which isn't always true. They have higher visibility - so when they transgress, everyone knows. High school and college athletes are participating when, if mental illness is going to appear, this is the time. Dr. Abrams can help identify problems and treat aggressively early to help the athlete return to play. Dr. Abrams' work helps athletes use their anger as fuel, to assist with performance, by identifying the level of intensity that a task needs. Any emotion at high levels interfere with the cognitive processes necessary for sport success, so the job is to learn the skills necessary modulate your emotions like a volume dial to the level the task needs. Moreover, Dr. Abrams helps athletes increase their personal power by mastering the psychological side of the game. Athletes are also wrongly stereotyped to be more likely to be involved in dating/sexual violence than their non-athlete peers. Though the evidence to support this is questionable, again, these are issues that athletes face and it is important to provide preventative (as well as responsive treatment) services that are specifically geared to an athlete population. Dr. Abrams has developed and presented workshops that focus on the many factors that contribute to increase risk. Some of these factors include:
Drugs/alcohol
Team dynamics
Issues related to abuse and violence (physical, emotional, psychological and sexual)
Confrontation of myths about sexuality
Understanding legal issues and potential consequences
A common (and understandable) sense of entitlement that comes from athletic success

Dr. Abrams will work with you to develop a program that is uniquely tailored to your organization's needs. Further, he does not believe in giving a presentation and that ends the consultation relationship. Dr. Abrams knows that single-session presentations have very limited value and are notoriously ineffective. Dr. Abrams will continue to have a consulting relationship with the organization to help perpetuate the successes that are achieved. Being a systemic thinker and a consultant that appreciates the complexities of individuals, systems and problems, Dr. Abrams can be a valuable asset in helping your organization navigate through the most treacherous of waters. If you would be interested in having Dr. Abrams lecture on the above topics or consult with your athletes/sports organizations, please contact him at (732) 738-0900 or email him at: [email protected].

The answer is the opposite of what most people think...
It's not narcissism...it's the chest-puffing that men do to compensate for inadequacies...

Yeah, you'd score a point on Serena Williams... OKAY...

Thanks to Cindy Kuzma and SELF Magazine for the opportunity to discuss.

Take a read...

Because far too many of them actually think they can score a point off Serena Williams.

As a sport psychologist, this article is wonderful grist for the mill as it captures both positive & negative things in sports these days. Yes, repeating a grade (or sometimes taking a PG year to get more "ready") seems like a weird way to move forward. Yes, spending the $$$ & time on his college & then pro football career is probabilistically unwise. Yes, this rigorous training leads to little time for having fun, being a kid, and socializing - which is critical for good social development. BUT, this is a young man with unbelievable work ethic & focus. His "people" have him off the streets, away from gangs and crime, and focused on positive goals. His grades appear to be (assuming there is no inflation that the star of the community sometimes get) only pad his college marketability. So there's a lot going on there. The protectiveness of his family may insulate him from undue influence and hanger-ons or prevent honest feedback about what he needs. Bottom line: it is tough being a student-athlete, especially a star. Everyone wants to be around you but they also cheer your fall from grace. There will be temptations and challenges. He will get angry and frustrated. He will get lonely. He won't perform his best every second of the day. Why? Because the kid is human. So what does a sport psychologist do? We remove the obstacles to success. Whether it is dealing with confidence issues (yes star athletes struggle with this more than you know), anxiety, social problems, coaching problems, educational problems, performance enhancement, moral development, goal setting, and help you learn how to keep your ass out of trouble. So though there are concerns for this young man, there are also a lot of great things sports are bringing him. If anyone wants to discuss more, back channel me. I've been working with athletes from youth sport to pro levels for almost 20 years. I personally wish this kid the best.

He is the No. 1 rated wrestler and football player in the U.S. He has 10 specialized trainers, his own PR guy and has made incredible sacrifices. Is it all worth it?

Issues prompted by Aaron Hernandez

Ex-NFL player Nate Kaeding and sports psychologist Dr. Mitch Abrams offer insights

Aaron Hernandez. Just the name now stirs emotions and makes us ask questions. The most obvious is: If Hernandez is guilty of murder as charged, why did he throw away his financial security and all that goes with it for a violent act or acts?

The latest Mike Hlas Podcast features former NFL placekicker Nate Kaeding of Iowa, and sports psychologist Dr. Mitch Abrams. Kaeding will be a regular contributor to the podcast. Abrams is the author of “Anger Management in Sport: Understanding and Controlling Violence in Athletes.”

Prompted by the arrest of former New England Patriots tight end Hernandez, we talk about whether there is more of a culture of violence and crime among NFL players than the general public, and what sports psychologists like Abrams can do to help athletes. Kaeding discusses how using sports psychologists helped him in his football career.
