Aging in place is more than simply saying, “I’m never leaving my house.”

It means taking an honest look at whether your home, support system, finances, and future plans will continue to work for you.

I was recently featured by the National Aging In Place Council - Greater Baltimore Chapter to talk about the difference between aging in place and aging in denial.

Planning early gives you choices. Waiting for a crisis often takes those choices away.

Take a look, and ask yourself: Am I truly planning or just hoping everything stays the same?

Q- What’s the difference between aging in place and aging in denial?

A- Aging in place is proactive. Aging in denial is reactive.
Aging in place means making thoughtful plans for how you want to live safely, comfortably, and independently as you age. It’s having conversations early, exploring options, making modifications before there’s a fall, and creating a support system before there’s a crisis.
Aging in denial sounds more like:

“I’m fine.”
“I’ll deal with it later.”
“I’m never leaving this house.”

The reality is, most people are not prepared when life suddenly changes because of a hospitalization, loss of a spouse, mobility issue, or caregiver burnout.

Planning ahead is not giving up independence. It’s protecting it.
Some of the strongest, most independent people I know are the ones willing to have honest conversations early and make decisions from a place of empowerment rather than urgency.
