Fun Fact Friday! 🐾❤️

Did you know a UGA-Tifton scientist helped lay the foundation for Georgia’s blueberry industry and even sent blueberry plants to First Lady Jackie Kennedy?

Dr. W.T. Brightwell, a longtime UGA-Tifton researcher, spent more than 30 years breeding and researching rabbiteye blueberries. His work led to the release of 10 blueberry varieties, including the ‘Brightwell’ blueberry, which was named in his honor. 🫐

His research helped shape Georgia’s growing blueberry industry, which today makes Georgia one of the nation’s leading blueberry-producing states.

From Tifton to farms around the world, Dr. Brightwell’s research continues to leave a lasting mark on agriculture.

Did you know UGA-Tifton’s Young Scholars Program gives high school students the opportunity to dive into agricultural research each summer?

YSP is a paid, five-week summer internship for students interested in agricultural, food, and environmental sciences. Participants spend their summer conducting hands-on research under the guidance of a UGA faculty mentor while gaining experience in different areas of agriculture. 🔬🌱

We’re proud of the UGA-Tifton researchers who serve as mentors and help these young scholars explore the many opportunities in agriculture.
