Spotlight Saturday: Steven Hudson 🌱
Meet Steven Hudson, Assistant to the Research Station Superintendent at UGA-Tifton! Steven has been part of the UGA-Tifton team for 18 years, serving in several roles along the way, including Research Technician at Alapaha Blueberry Farm and Senior Agricultural Specialist at Bowen Farm. Today, he assists with the management and coordination of daily operations across multiple agricultural research farms.
Steven’s day-to-day responsibilities are anything but the same. He coordinates land preparation, irrigation, equipment, harvest activities, field maintenance, repairs, and purchasing while supporting faculty, researchers, extension specialists, and farm staff. He also helps troubleshoot issues with irrigation, drainage, erosion, equipment, and infrastructure and participates in prescribed burning to improve timber stands across the farms.
His favorite part of working at UGA-Tifton? He might tell you 5 o’clock! 😂But what he really enjoys is supporting research that directly benefits Georgia agriculture while working alongside dedicated faculty and staff. The variety of the job and helping research succeed are what make the work rewarding.
One of the most valuable things Steven has learned during his time at UGA-Tifton is that successful research takes a team effort. From faculty and technicians to farm staff, everyone plays an important role in a project. Communication, trust, teamwork, and being adaptable are all important parts of making that team successful.
Steven has helped research scientists increase their row crop production for research trials at Bowen Farm, improve irrigation and farm operations, and raise the overall standard and appearance of the farm. He believes in continually looking for ways to improve the farms, not just for special occasions, but every day. From equipment purchases and repairs to farm improvements and beautification efforts, Steven works to keep the farms looking their best while making sure equipment and resources are ready to meet the needs of research projects. He strives to set a high standard across the farms and continually find ways to make them more efficient, functional, and well-maintained.
Fun fact: Steven is a proud girl dad, and now his daughter is his forever hunting buddy! Hunting and taxidermy are favorite hobbies that Steven enjoys sharing with his family.
