It’s rare disease awareness day! I wanted to do a post about Elhers Danlos Syndrome. Why EDS specifically? Because I (Lois Friedman/President) have EDS, more specifically I have Hyper-mobile Elhers Danlos Syndrome!

There are actually 13 different types of Elhers Danlos Syndrome and HEDS is the most common of them all. All 13 types of EDS are connective tissue diseases which means our joints are not the best and we are more at risk for dislocations and can easily get bruised. It is also a genetic disease so it is something we were born with. It is still being studied and there isn’t a ton of knowledge about EDS which is one of the reasons it’s so rare.

We are also what’s known as zebras because in the medical world none phrase known is “ when you hear the sound of hooves, think horses, not zebras.” This means that medical students should think of more common diagnoses and not rare which leads to a lot of misdiagnoses for people. That’s why we are zebras! Our awareness ribbon is also zebra print!

Come join us tomorrow November 16, on our ADA violation scavenger hunt. We will be going around campus and taken photos of and documenting locations that aren't disability friendly. If the weather doesn't hold up, we will be hanging signs above the automatic door buttons to remind people not to kick or punch them and that people need and use those buttons. So come join us! We hope to see you all there!!
