Long before Greg Williamson became superintendent of Tiffin City Schools, he was a kid growing up in Bettsville and learning what hard work looked like from his parents.

His father, Roger, drove a truck for more than 30 years and later became a school bus driver. His mother, Saundra, spent more than 30 years serving students as a school cook.

Those lessons still shape the way he leads today.

“I’m not one who feels like I need respect just because of my title,” Williamson said. “I think you have to earn it.”

Lincoln Pre-K welcomed our youngest Tornadoes this week, and these first-day smiles say it all!

MORE THAN MUSIC: “YOUR STUDENTS MADE HIS NIGHT.” 🎺

Matt Marles almost didn’t play Friday night.

The 74-year-old Mansfield Senior graduate had not been feeling well. He wasn’t sure he had enough energy to join the Tyger Alumni Band, but Matt, a member of the Class of 1970 who still plays trumpet, decided to take the field.

As Matt made his way onto the field, Tiffin Columbian Marching Band students welcomed him with high-fives. It was a simple act of kindness that gave him a moment of joy when he needed it most.

“Seeing him light up and enjoy himself was something I will never forget,” Matt’s daughter, Kristy Slagle, later wrote to Band Director Mike Meadows. “He even got teary-eyed as he told me how respectful those kids were.”

“Your students made his night.”

Later, Matt gave everyone around him a moment to remember. During the third quarter, while other band members were getting concessions, the Tygers scored a touchdown. Matt lifted his trumpet and played the Mansfield fight song by himself, delighting those around him.

Kristy said the way Columbian’s students treated her father was about more than good sportsmanship.

“They demonstrated that being in a band is about so much more than music,” she wrote. “It’s about respect, kindness, community and making people feel like they belong.”

“We have some great kids here in TCS,” Band Director Mike Meadows said. He said that he and fellow Band Director Sam Berlekamp are excited and honored to work with these students and be part of their journeys.

Our students did not need to know Matt’s story to make a difference. They simply saw someone walking toward the field and chose kindness.

Sometimes that is all it takes.

A moment of respect. A simple high-five. A reminder that the way we make people feel can matter long after the final note is played.

We are incredibly proud of the Columbian Marching Band. Thank you, Kristy, for making sure this moment did not go unnoticed. And thank you, Matt, for allowing us to share your story.

A few high-fives. One unforgettable night. We could not be prouder of these Tornadoes. 💙💛

🔬 Teamwork takes center stage in the science lab!

Miss Stake's 6th and 7th grade science classes kicked off the school year by exploring what makes a great team. Then they put it to the test.

Our 6th graders took on a hands-on drawing challenge using a dry-erase marker with four strings attached. No one could touch the marker directly, and every team member had to hold a string. The only way to draw? Communicate and move in sync.

Meanwhile, 7th graders tackled a numerical challenge, working together to uncover hidden patterns and put the numbers in order.

Great problem-solving starts with great teamwork, and these Tornadoes are off to a strong start! 🌪️

🚌 Transportation Update
Ongoing road construction and unexpected road closures throughout Tiffin may occasionally affect bus pickup and drop-off times. Our drivers are working hard to adjust their routes and remain as close to schedule as possible while keeping student safety their top priority.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our families as drivers navigate these changing conditions. Our Transportation Department is also processing a high volume of last-minute bus requests and schedule changes.

** UPDATE 10:50 a.m.: The phone system at the Admin building is now operational. **

TCS OPERATIONS UPDATE

Tiffin City Schools experienced a brief interruption to power, internet and phone service at approximately 9:30 a.m. All school buildings are now fully operational.

The TCS Admin Building is open and operating, but its phone service remains unavailable. If you are unable to reach us by phone, please visit us at 244 S. Monroe St. in Tiffin or email Pat Smith at [email protected].

CONNECTING THE CLASSROOM TO OUR COMMUNITY: A FULL-CIRCLE MOMENT 🏫🤝
Once a Business Builders student. Now a community leader.

Years ago, Bryce Riggs sat in Mrs. Stacey Geiger’s entrepreneurship class at Columbian High School. This week, he returned to the same classroom, with the same teacher, to share his career journey with today’s students.

Bryce, President and CEO of the Seneca County Collaborative, spoke about the importance of getting to know the businesses in your community and learning from the people around you. He also explained how healthy competition can inspire entrepreneurs to improve, grow and find new opportunities to collaborate for the benefit of the entire community.

Now, this year’s Business Builders students are preparing to make community connections of their own through visits to downtown businesses and conversations with local entrepreneurs.
