I am excited to share I have started a new role as an Interpreter. For years I have done Translation as a freelancer; however, my location never offered enough work for in-person interpretation opportunities. I welcome the face-to- face interactions in my own community, growing my network and sharing my expertise with those seeking professional language services. It's a great privilege and a challenge I'm ready to take! Many who need such services require attentive and kind listening as well as the assurance that someone truly understands their language and can support their rights! As you may know, I teach English as a Second Language as well as Portuguese. It's been particularly hard to stay away from the COVID-19 topic, so I have been using music to explore language, vocabulary, culture and to add some fun to our routine! Boa comunicação acontece quando tomamos em conta quem vai receber a mensagem.
Adoniran Barbosa é um bom exemplo disso. Escreveu músicas para o povo, com pronúncias incorretas de acordo com a elite intelectual. No entanto, se tornou famoso, alcançou sua audiência! Antes de se comunicar com alguém, sua avó, seu amigo, o encanador, seu cliente...tente falar a língua que vai promover a melhor comunicação entre as duas partes da fala. Parece lógico mas muitas vezes esquecemos o obvio! Feliz aniversário Adoniran!

Good communication happens when we take into consideration our audience. Adoniran Barbosa is a good example to follow. He wrote songs for the people, the pronunciation was considered incorrect by the norm. Still, he became famous, he reached his audience. Before you talk to someone, your grandma, your friend, the plumber, your client… try the language that will promote the best communication possible for both parts. It's just common sense, yet we often forget the obvious! Happy Birthday, Adoniran!

Halloween is here again!This very American Holiday is now part of our Pop-Culture and many countries joined in on the celebration adopting some of our fun traditions. Like most of you, I’m a little down…so much going on that is so negative! So, I’ve decided to write a piece on something to cheer you up this Friday evening.
Have you heard of Forró? Já ouviu falar de Forró? Forró is a type of music very popular in Brazil, it started more specifically in the Northeast of the country. Usually, there are 3 musicians playing the Forró: o sanfoneiro (an accordion player), o zabumbeiro (a bass drum player) e o tocador de triângulo (the idiophone player).
There are very talented Forró players, but I choose the band “Forro in the Dark” because of its fusion appeal. The purists must forgive me here, we are trying to bring people, language, and culture together!
“Forro in the Dark “is formed by a group of expatriates living in New York joined by the need to foster their cultural traditions. They got together back in 2002; now they have several albums out. Some of their hits are instrumental only, others have lyrics difficult to fully translate. In any case, enjoy the sound, sing along, and even add it your workout list!
This band showcases the richness of two different cultures brought together by individuals facing unforeseen circumstances as immigrants! I’m already feeling better!

Right now, Netflix has a wide variety of titles in Portuguese! As always, I want to emphasize the importance of culture in language learning. Also, you will laugh a little, there's a lot of comedy in this package. I haven't seen all the titles, but I think you can select those relevant to you according to your own interests and level of understanding.

I personally need a lot of comedy to distract me from the current social and political realities!

No momento, Netflix tem uma grande variedade de títulos em português! Como sempre, quero enfatizar a importância da cultura no aprendizado de língua. E também, vocês vão poder rir um pouco, tem muita comédia neste pacote. Eu não vi todos os títulos, mas acho que vocês podem selecionar aqueles que lhes sejam relevantes de acordo com seu interesse e nível de entendimento.

Eu pessoalmente preciso de muita comédia para me distrair da realidade social-política dos dias de hoje.
