Oak-Tober is ON!

The winds are expected to calm down this afternoon, and we're excited to welcome everyone to Horizon Hills tonight from 4:00–6:00 PM!

We know many of our families are dealing with power outages and a stressful day. Come take a break, enjoy some fresh air, let the little ones play, and connect with your community.

We'll have hands-on nature activities, local experts, family fun, and plenty of opportunities to learn and explore together.

Free admission and open to the whole community!

THE TEN PILLARS OF PARENT EDUCATION AT HORIZON HILLS
Pillar 3: Co-Regulation
Before children can regulate their emotions independently, they need repeated experiences of being supported through big feelings.
That's where co-regulation comes in.
When a toddler is overwhelmed, their developing brain may not yet have the skills to manage frustration, disappointment, or anger on its own. A calm, responsive adult can help them work through those emotions.
Co-regulation might look like sitting nearby during a meltdown, offering a hug, acknowledging frustration, or simply being present until your child is ready to reconnect.
And here's something important: co-regulation doesn't require you to be perfectly calm all the time.
Parents have big feelings, too. When you lose your patience, taking responsibility and repairing the connection afterward helps children learn that relationships can withstand difficult moments.
At Horizon Hills, we help parents understand the developmental reasons behind children's behavior and practice responding with connection rather than punishment.

Oak-Tober is making headlines!
We're excited to see the community taking notice of the 1,000 Oaks for Thousand Oaks initiative and our upcoming Oak-Tober celebration at Horizon Hills.
ISA Certified Urban Forest Professional Lance Walker of Tree Walker Inc. is working toward an ambitious goal: planting 1,000 native oak trees throughout our community.
We're proud to support this effort and help introduce young children and their families to the importance of caring for our local environment.
Join us this Friday, October 16, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM for Oak-Tober!
We'll have hands-on nature activities, opportunities to meet local experts, food, and baby oak trees available for adoption while supplies last.
Free admission and open to the entire community.

You lost your patience.
You handled something differently than you wish you had.
Now what?
Pillar 2 of the Horizon Hills Ten Pillars of Parent Education is Repair & Connection.
Healthy relationships aren’t relationships without conflict, frustration, or mistakes. What matters is what happens afterward.
Repair can sound like:
“I yelled, and that wasn’t okay.”
“I’m sorry. Can we try that again?”
“I love you, even when we’re having a hard time.”
When adults take responsibility and reconnect, children learn something powerful: relationships can have hard moments without losing love or connection.
And there’s another benefit. When we model genuine repair, we’re showing children what taking responsibility looks like rather than simply telling them to say “sorry.”
At Horizon Hills, parent education isn’t about becoming a perfect parent. It’s about understanding ourselves and our children so we have more tools for what comes next.

Sometimes letting a young child “help” makes the job take approximately 400% longer.
Let them anyway.
Young children are learning that they’re capable and that they have a meaningful place in the family. Small, real jobs give them opportunities to practice skills while experiencing the satisfaction of contributing.
Try:
• Matching socks
• Putting napkins on the table
• Watering plants
• Wiping up spills
• Putting toys in a basket
• Carrying lightweight groceries
• Feeding a pet with help
The goal isn’t for them to do the job perfectly. It’s for them to begin thinking, “I can do things. I can contribute. I belong here.”
At Horizon Hills, we encourage families to look for everyday opportunities that help children build confidence, independence, and connection.

Something new is growing at Horizon Hills!
Join us for Oak-Tober, a free community celebration of nature, childhood, and the deep roots that connect us.
Friday, October 16
4:00–6:00 PM
Horizon Hills
33 Greta St., Thousand Oaks
FREE and open to the community
Spend the evening exploring hands-on education stations, meeting local environmental organizations and growers, enjoying nature-based activities, and grabbing dinner from La Carreta.
You’ll meet community partners including Tree Walker Inc., Farm Fresh To You, the Los Angeles County Fire Department Malibu Forestry Unit, Athens Services, and local beekeepers and Horizon Hills family the Gerdas.
We’ll also introduce our Legacy Tree Sponsorship program, an opportunity to help plant mature native trees on the Horizon Hills campus and grow our school canopy for generations to come.
Bring your family, invite your friends and neighbors, and come help us celebrate everything that grows at Horizon Hills.

You don't need an elaborate activity to encourage curiosity. Sometimes five minutes outside is enough.
Take a walk around your yard, neighborhood, or local park and invite your child to look for tiny treasures.
Try finding something rough, smooth, colorful, or unusually shaped. Ask questions like "What do you notice?" or "What do you think this feels like?"
There's no need to collect anything or find the right answers. The fun is in noticing things together.
At Horizon Hills, we believe some of the richest learning happens when children have the freedom to explore and adults take the time to follow their curiosity.

Have you ever heard yourself say something to your child and thought, "Oh no. I sound exactly like my parents"?
Welcome to cycle breaking!
Over the coming weeks, we're going to be introducing the Ten Pillars of Horizon Hills, the foundational concepts we explore with parents in our program.
Our first pillar is Cycle Breaking.
Cycle breaking starts with recognizing the parenting patterns we grew up with and deciding which ones we want to carry forward and which ones we'd like to change.
It's not about blaming previous generations or becoming a perfect parent. It's about understanding our own experiences so we can respond to our children with greater intention.
And when those old patterns inevitably sneak back in? That's an opportunity to practice another important skill: repair.
At Horizon Hills, we believe that when parents learn and grow, the entire family benefits.

Our teachers usually make playdough, art projects, and sensory activities. On October 7, we’re making GUAC!
Join us at Sharky’s in Janss Marketplace for our October We Dine Wednesday Guac Smash fundraiser.
