What happens when you want to parent differently than you were parented? Why can your child completely lose it over something that seems tiny? What’s the difference between discipline, punishment, and consequences?
Let’s talk about it.
THE PARENTING LAB is a three-night parent workshop series at Horizon Hills:
September 22
Healing childhood wounds, cycle breaking, apologies vs. non-apologies, and repairing after yelling.
September 29
Neuroscience of the developing brain, co-regulation, feelings, and regulation vs. suppression.
October 6
Discipline, punishment and consequences, conflict resolution, and 12 tips for effective communication.
Tuesday nights from 6:00–8:00 PM
Horizon Hills MPR
33 Greta St., Thousand Oaks
$60 for currently enrolled Horizon Hills families
$100 for non-enrolled families
Optional childcare is available for $25 per night. Space for childcare is limited.
Call (805) 492-8837 to register or visit HorizonHills.org for more information.

Our Garden Preschool is growing!
Due to overwhelming demand, we’re adding a new Monday/Wednesday Garden Preschool class with Ms. Angie beginning September 2.
Garden Preschool gives children the opportunity to spend most of their class day in our one-acre learning garden, where they learn through hands-on experiences with nature. Children still enjoy our shared play spaces and the classroom structure families expect from Horizon Hills, along with the strong parent education and support at the heart of our program.
Because this class begins September 2, tuition will be prorated.
If Garden Preschool has been on your wish list, now is your chance to join us! Visit HorizonHills.org or call (805) 492-8837 for enrollment information or to schedule a tour.

This week, meet Ms. Lindsey Cuadra (she/her)!
Lindsey has more than 20 years of experience in early childhood education and earned her degree in Early Childhood Education from CSUN. She has worked extensively with children from toddlerhood through Pre-K at the Moorpark College Child Development Center and has also served as a mentor teacher in parent and adult education.
Lindsey believes parents play an incredibly important role in shaping their children’s futures. She loves parent education because understanding child development can help families strengthen relationships, approach challenges with greater confidence, and better understand the little people they’re raising.
When she isn’t teaching, Lindsey enjoys hiking, going to the beach, coaching youth sports, and spending time with her husband and two children.
We’re so glad to have Lindsey as part of the Horizon Hills community!
Want to learn alongside experienced Parent Educators like Lindsey? Our new school year begins August 24, and enrollment is still open. Visit HorizonHills.org or call (805) 492-8837 to learn more or schedule a tour.

Back to school often brings new routines, and sometimes that means difficult goodbyes.
Try creating the same short goodbye ritual each time you separate. Maybe it’s a hug, two kisses, a high five, and “I’ll see you after school.” Keep it warm, confident, and predictable.
It can be tempting to sneak away when your child is distracted or keep returning for one more hug when they’re upset. A consistent goodbye helps your child learn what to expect and, over time, builds trust that you leave and you come back.
Parenting is full of transitions like this. At Horizon Hills, our experienced parenting teachers help families understand what’s happening developmentally and find practical approaches that work for their family.

Here’s a simple back to school tradition you can start right on your sidewalk.
Trace your child with chalk, then let them turn their outline into a snapshot of who they are right now. What’s their favorite food? What do they love to play? What makes them laugh? What do they want to learn?
Take a photo when they’re finished and save it. At the end of the school year, do it again and compare. You might be surprised by how much changes in just a few months.

Meet Ms. Valerie Badica (she/her)!
Valerie earned her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood and Adolescent Development and her master’s degree in Educational Psychology from CSUN. She brings more than five years of experience teaching preschool-aged children and leading parent-child classes.
As both an educator and a mom of two, Valerie believes in supporting early learning through play, meaningful relationships, and hands-on exploration. She works to create a warm, safe environment where children and caregivers can build strong connections and families feel supported in their parenting.
Outside of Horizon Hills, Valerie lives in Moorpark with her husband and two young children, who keep the family busy with sports and playdates.
We’re so happy to have Valerie as part of the Horizon Hills community!

Sometimes the simplest activities are the biggest hits. Give your child a paintbrush and a cup or bucket of water, then find a safe outdoor surface and let them paint.
Try making shapes, drawing pictures, writing letters, or painting one giant masterpiece together. Children get to experiment with cause and effect as they watch the water change the surface and eventually disappear, all while practicing fine motor skills and creative thinking.
Enjoy this activity? At Horizon Hills, our experienced parenting teachers share hands-on play ideas, practical parenting tips, and child development insights with families every week. Join us and take home plenty of new ideas to try together!

This week we're excited to introduce Ms. Jamie Alfonso (she/her)!
Jamie teaches in our Two-Year-Old program, a place that's especially close to her heart because she was once a Horizon Hills parent herself. She holds a Master's degree in Education and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from CSU Long Beach and spent 12 years teaching in elementary classrooms before joining our team.
Jamie loves helping children learn through play and discovery. Her interests in nature, science, and animals inspire many of the experiences she creates for her students. She's also trained in restorative justice practices and is committed to building respectful, caring relationships where every child and family feels welcomed and supported.
We're so grateful to have Jamie as part of the Horizon Hills community!
Interested in learning with teachers like Jamie? Our Two-Year-Old classes are enrolling now. Visit HorizonHills.org or call (805) 492-8837 to schedule a tour.
