Commemorating Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month

From September 15 to October 15, we honor the vibrant histories, contributions, and leadership of Latine communities that continue to shape our nation and our university. At Cal Lutheran, our growing Latine student population enriches our classrooms, leadership, and community.

At the Center for Educational Excellence & Equity (CEEE), we celebrate these legacies by promoting equity, authentic community, and meaningful educational practices. Together, we remain committed to preparing leaders who advocate for access, opportunity, and success across P–20 schools.

Key Insights:
- 41% of California’s population identifies as Latine.
- 39% of Cal Lutheran’s undergraduate student population is Hispanic.
- 37% of Cal Lutheran faculty are people of color.

This week, we observe Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) Week!

Cal Lutheran is proud to be recognized as an HSI—a designation achieved in 2016 after surpassing the 25% Hispanic undergraduate enrollment threshold in 2013. Since then, Cal Lutheran has received more than $11 million in federal Title III and Title V grants to strengthen academic programs, mentoring, and student success initiatives that benefit the entire university community.

Key Insights
📊 602 HSIs exist nationally
🌎 20% of higher education institutions across 27 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico are HSIs
🎓 More than 60% of all Latine undergraduates are enrolled at HSIs
💜💛 39% of Cal Lutheran’s undergraduate student population is Hispanic

At the Center for Educational Excellence & Equity (CEEE), we observe this milestone and recommit to the ongoing work of building opportunity, community, and excellence for all students.

On Women’s Equality Day, we remember the courage of the suffragists—like those in 1913 carrying the banner “I Wish Ma Could Vote.” Their voices paved the way for the freedoms we hold today.

“There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.” — Susan B. Anthony

At the Center for Educational Excellence & Equity, we honor that legacy by empowering women educators to lead with vision, courage, and equity—now and for generations to come.

As our Summer Learning Series comes to a close, we would like to thank you for joining us in leaning into growth, equity, and reflection. Your commitment to learning is what keeps this work alive.

📖 One final reflection:
“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” —Frederick Douglass
A reminder from one of our nation’s most powerful voices: learning opens doors—not just to knowledge, but to freedom, confidence, and transformation.

We hope your summer reading offered both mirrors and windows, and that you carry this spirit of inquiry into the year ahead.
