Time for today's episode of, "Ask a death doula".

Ask me anything!! What do you want to know?

01/30/2023

It's Monday so that means it's New Terminology day!

Today's term is: Legacy Project

A legacy project can look like almost anything but the point of the project is to leave something behind for your loved ones. These can be simple or as creative as possible. The skies the limit. Legacy projects can be photo albums, letters to loved ones, video messages, hand molds, new photos, etc. These can be a wonderful way to spend quality time with loved ones and make new memories.

What would you want to do for your legacy project?

Today's subject: Tell your story.

Please tell a story about a loved one who you lost and if you feel inclined, include how you felt about the experience. What was good? What was bad? What do you wish you knew beforehand and what thoughts or knowledge do you want to pass along to others? This can be a painful exercise so please take care and only share if it is in your heart to do so.

New terminology Monday!!

Vigil/vigil planning-

The dying process is very personal and no two experiences are the same, but often a dying person, at the very end, will begin to transition to what we call their vigil time. This is the time when they begin the active dying process. This means that they will be in a very deep sleep or coma type state and often will not be responsive at all or very minimally. This is a very sacred time. It begins their work to internally prepare for their death. This state looks very inactive from the outside but inside, the dying person and their body are working quite hard to engage in the shutdown process. This is much like labor and a person's surroundings at this time can make a large difference during this stage. This is why we offer vigil planning.

With vigil planning, we speak with the dying person first and ask them what they want if they are able to communicate. We ask if they want music or quiet. Do they want certain smells? Do they want light touch or no touch? Some people have asked things such as having each person spend a minute in silence before entering the room to bring a calm energy. Some ask to have only certain conversations while in their presence. There are so many ways to completely customize the vigil experience. Now, sometimes the patient will not be able to communicate for various reasons and then we ask the family. Often it is a family activity. Most doulas will do absolutely anything they can, even if the request is unusual or difficult to makes these requests happen. There are times when a vigil is planned out but when the time comes, certain things seem to agitate the dying person, so we may not do something that was previously planned. Flexibility is key. With these plans we can honor the sacredness of this time and make it as comfortable as possible.

Please ask if you have any further questions.

Good afternoon loves. Tuesdays will be "Ask a Death Doula"

So, ask me anything!! What do you want to know about end of life or about death doulas?

01/17/2023

Hello my friends! As I begin to activate this page I will be beginning to make a few different weekly posts. My goal is to bring awareness and education about all end of life and death doula topics. I also hope to destigmatize death and dying and make it a less scary prospect. Another goal of mine is to help people learn how to grieve in a healthier way. We are not taught how to grieve in our society and there are so many ways to grieve more thoroughly and healthily for a better outcome. I encourage everyone to ask questions and tell relevant stories. This is a safe space to learn and grow. I look forward to going on this journey with you all. Namaste and blessings. 🙏
