Never underestimate a child’s imagination, curiosity, and drive!

This learner was given the assignment to create a video presentation about the job she wants when she grows up, she confidently told me, “I want to be a mermaid!”

Of course, I was excited to tell her that being a mermaid is actually a real job right here in Florida at Weeki Wachee Springs!

So we got to work. We researched the requirements, learned about what professional mermaids actually do, and created her presentation. Her classmates even jumped in to help create the underwater scenery for her video.

This is what I love about learning. A child has an idea, and instead of telling them what is realistic or unrealistic, we say, “That sounds great! Let’s find out more.”

Because the truth is, we have absolutely no idea what the future holds for these children.

Today it may be a mermaid. Tomorrow it may be a scientist, artist, farmer, engineer, teacher, or something that hasn’t even been imagined yet.

Our job is to give them the confidence, knowledge, and freedom to explore the possibilities.

Dream big, little mermaid. The world is full of possibilities!

There is never a dull day on the farm!

We have been busy at both farms doing chores, caring for animals, and discovering all the little surprises that come with farm life. Our young hens have officially started laying eggs, which is very exciting around here!

Our little horse keeps us busy with daily grooming, brushing, feeding, and, of course, his monthly bath. The cows are always ready for a little love and a few treats, and our chickens are quite the social bunch. They even listen to all kinds of commands!

But farm life is about more than chores. It is about learning that another living being is counting on you.

Our learners are happy to pitch in, get their hands dirty, and do whatever needs to be done. They are learning responsibility, patience, compassion, and the simple joy that comes from taking good care of something else.

Around here, learning has four legs, feathers, hooves, and sometimes a little mud!

How do we explore the world in a Montessori classroom without ever leaving it?

In Montessori, we begin with the big picture and gradually move toward the smaller details. We literally put the world into the children’s hands!

Our beautiful Montessori materials give children a concrete way to explore our planet. We begin with the continents, using our sandpaper globe and continent map to learn where each part of our world fits.

The children are also getting creative and making their own continent maps. This hands-on work helps them solidify what they are learning before moving on to more detailed studies of each continent and the oceans.

From there, we will continue deeper into geography, discovering more about our amazing planet and the people, places, animals, and environments that make it unique.

And the best part? The children will explore together while also following their own interests and questions, allowing their studies to grow naturally from their curiosity.

The world is a big place. Let’s explore it together!

This is why multi-age groups work beautifully at Freedom Montessori, students use prior knowledge and build on it. Students learn critical thinking and research skills at a young age. Students are allowed to be independent learners at FMA!

A little tour of our Dade City farm indoor environment!

Our Montessori environment is designed to give children both freedom and purpose. Inside, you’ll find students peacefully choosing work from our wonderful Montessori materials while enjoying the fresh air and beautiful trees just outside the barn.

During our afternoon work cycle, some students choose to work indoors while others head outside to play, explore, and connect with nature. They have the freedom to choose the environment that best meets their needs.

Our educators are nearby, observing, guiding, and offering support when needed. This is Montessori in action: children learning to make meaningful choices, developing independence, and finding their own balance between focused work and outdoor play.

At Freedom Montessori Academy, we believe children thrive when they have the freedom to learn, explore, and grow in a thoughtfully prepared environment.

The Montessori Work Cycle

The beginning of the academic year is such an exciting time in a Montessori environment.

Our learners are getting to know the routines, the classroom, the materials, and most importantly, their freedoms within the learning environment. We give lessons, and then the students begin making choices about what they would like to explore and practice.

For some, this freedom is a little bewildering at first. “I get to choose?” Yes, you do!

We are watching students become excited about new lessons, discover interests, and gradually develop confidence in making purposeful choices.

The Montessori work cycle is a beautiful balance of independence, respect, responsibility, and mindfulness of others. Children are learning that freedom comes with responsibility and that their choices exist within a community.

As teachers, this is one of the most exciting parts to observe. We get to watch the classroom community take shape as each learner finds their place within it.
