Big Kid doing Big Things 💕

When 21-year-old flight instructor Emily took off from Pensacola International Airport on Monday morning (August 3), she expected a standard training flight. Instead, she and her student- who was experiencing his very first flight lesson - faced every pilot's ultimate test.

Cruising in a Piper PA-28 Cherokee (N41622), the cockpit suddenly filled with the smell of burning oil, followed by a rapid drop in oil pressure and total engine failure.

Realizing a return to the airport was impossible, Emily made the split-second decision to set the aircraft down on Interstate 10 east near mile marker 14. Demonstrating incredible skill and composure, she navigated the aircraft right under an overhead highway sign structure before greasing a textbook touchdown on the open interstate.

No injuries were reported either on board or on the ground.

Emily: "I've practiced this exact scenario many times, just never thought I'd actually have to execute it in real life. I feel my training has prepared me exceptionally well for this moment."

Huge kudos to Emily for her exemplary airmanship, calm demeanor, and turning an emergency into a masterclass in safety. Clear skies and smooth roads ahead!

💙 This bird exists nowhere else on Earth. Not in another state. Not in another country. Only in Florida scrub habitat — and we're running out of that habitat fast. 🐦

The Florida scrub jay is the only bird species entirely endemic to Florida, meaning it lives here and absolutely nowhere else on the planet. They're famously fearless and curious, often approaching humans without hesitation — a trait that makes them beloved by birdwatchers. But their scrub habitat, one of Florida's most threatened ecosystems, has been reduced by development to a fraction of its historic range, putting this entirely unique bird on the federal threatened species list.
