McDuffie County School System McDuffie County School System official page The county's total population is 23,000 and includes the City of Thomson, and the Town of Dearing.

The McDuffie County School System serves 3,500 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in east central Georgia, about 30 miles west of Augusta. The school system has 6 school campuses: Dearing Elementary (PK-5), Maxwell Elementary (PK-1), Thomson Elementary (2-3), Norris Elementary (4-5), Thomson-McDuffie Middle (6-8), and Thomson High (9-12). We also have alternative education programs,

including the McDuffie Achievement Center and GNETS psycho-educational services. Our district features such innovative efforts as a 4X4 high school schedule and satellite interactive distance learning. Administrators, teachers, and students are eager to share information with other school districts and anyone else interested.

During the August 18 board of education planning session, Jefferson Energy Cooperative was recognized for its dedication as a business partner of the McDuffie County School System. At the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year, the cooperative donated school supplies that were distributed to elementary students. Also during the meeting, Jefferson Energy presented a check for $13,000 of capital credits return to Thomson High School, something it is doing for all its members, following the past two years of rebuilding after Hurricane Helene.
