ATTENTION FARMERS--Contact your crop insurance agent for questions on corn and soybean quality issues
Handling and harvest of damaged or discolored crops may vary depending on the specific situation, but connecting with your crop insurance agent is an important first step to establishing a quality loss claim. Crop insurance companies advise farmers who are concerned about damaged grain to start by having a sample taken from a truck or combine professionally graded. A small, hand-shelled sample from the field generally isn't enough to accurately determine the extent of damage. Damaged crops shouldn't be commingled with crops from other fields in storage until they have been reviewed by a crop insurance adjuster, especially if you suspect mycotoxins that may compromise feed quality.

Harvest is in full swing and Winnebago County Farm Bureau wants to remind motorists to slow down and stay alert as farmers move tractors, combines, grain carts, and other agricultural equipment on local roads during harvest season. We also encourage farmers and growers to make safety a top priority, both on the road and in the field.
As harvest activity increases, keep these important safety tips in mind:
• Watch your speed and be patient. At 60 miles per hour, it takes only 10 seconds to close a gap the length of a football field between your vehicle and a tractor traveling 25 miles per hour. If you are delayed behind a tractor traveling 20 mph for two miles, you'll lose only about six minutes, about the same amount of time spent waiting at a stoplight.
• Be cautious around turning equipment. A tractor, combine, or semi-truck may appear to be pulling to the side of the road to allow traffic to pass, when in reality it may be preparing to make a wide turn. Watch carefully for turn signals and allow plenty of space as farm equipment exits roadways or makes left-hand turns.
• Never pull out in front of farm equipment. Large agricultural equipment cannot stop or slow down as quickly as a passenger vehicle, especially when towing implements or hauling grain.
• Give oversized equipment plenty of room. If wide farm machinery is approaching from the opposite direction, slow down and be prepared to move over safely. If necessary, pull over and wait for the equipment to pass.
• Look for the Slow Moving Vehicle emblem. The orange triangular SMV sign identifies tractors and other vehicles traveling 25 mph or less and serves as an important reminder to reduce speed and use caution.
Harvest is one of the busiest and most important times of the year in agriculture. By working together and sharing the road with patience and care, farmers and motorists can help keep our roads, farms, and communities safe.

160 fourth graders from Lake Mills Community School District, Forest City Community School District and North Iowa Community School District attended Winnebago County Farm Bureau's annual Ag/Safety Fair at the Winnebago County Fair - Thompson, IA grounds.
The kids spent the morning rotating through 19 different stations, and they learned so much and had a blast doing it!
This is one of our favorite events and we couldn't do it without Forest City FFA Chapter, Lake Mills FFA and the North Iowa FFA along with all the great organizations who participate. Thank you for making a great day for the kids!

FB County Board members from Winnebago, Worth and Kossuth counties recently received a private tour of the Fendt plant in Jackson, Minnesota, the North American home of the Fendt brand. The Fendt brand of tractors originated in Germany in 1930 and continues to be manufactured there today. Fendt tractors, combines, TerraGators, planters, and balers are now used throughout the world.
During the in-depth tour, the group was able to observe every aspect of the assembly process for both tractors and TerraGators. As the equipment moved down the assembly lines, parts were added by skilled employees at more than 60 workstations, allowing the machines to gradually take shape. It was evident that the company takes great pride in quality and efficiency, with multiple inspections and quality checks conducted throughout the assembly process.
The group also learned that many components are manufactured in-house using advanced technologies such as laser cutting and 3D printing. These processes help ensure precision, consistency, and efficiency in production.
The tour was enjoyed by all who attended and provided a unique, interesting, and informative look at the manufacturing processes behind some of the world's most advanced agricultural equipment.

The Clay County Fair runs September 12-20, and Winnebago Farm Bureau can help you save some cash on your tickets!
Advanced ticket prices for adults (ages 13 and up) are $9 and children under 12 are free. When you buy advanced tickets, you get a 3-dollar savings plus you can bypass the ticket line at the fair. Stop into the Winnebago County Farm Bureau office between 8-4:30 Monday-Friday to purchase your tickets. Deadline for advanced ticket sales is September 11.

Did you know that if there wasn’t all that pesky silk on our sweet corn ears – there wouldn’t even BE sweet corn (or field corn)?
Corn silk refers to the long, thread-like fibers found on the ears of both sweet corn and field corn. Each strand of corn silk is a part of the female flower, and each strand is connected to a potential kernel of corn.
The tassel (the feathery stuff at the very top of the stalk) is the male part of the plant that produces pollen. When the plant is “tasseling” pollen gets sprinkled onto the silk strands and travels down the ear to fertilize each future kernel. The number of silks that successfully captures pollen determines the number of kernels that will develop on the ear of corn.
Pretty amazing!
