We'd like to welcome our newest Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) to campus!

Joining us this year: Angie (France🇫🇷), Niamh (Ireland🇮🇪) and Berta (Spain🇪🇸)

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the FLTA program brings exceptional international educators to teach language courses, share their cultures and enrich our campus community. Traveling across the world to teach and study for a year takes incredible courage and curiosity, and we are thrilled to have them with us!

The FLTAs are integral to our academic and cultural programs on campus. We are one of eight schools in the country that offer Irish language courses each year. Without a French faculty member on campus, the FLTA allows us to offer French courses in both Davidson and Davie counties. And while we do have full-time Spanish faculty, our Spanish-language FLTA helps meet the heavy demand for Spanish courses. Culturally, they serve as ambassadors, but they are also wonderful role models for our students.

Our time in Bordeaux is coming to an end. Students are changed from this experience. There will be things that they know and can identify now, but the power of this opportunity will continue to reveal itself for months and years to come. It will be in the smiles as they remember the connections and the inside jokes, it will be in the moments that they need to make a quick decision, it will be in the moments they need to make a more contemplative decision, and it will be in so many other facets that we cannot begin to name. Au Revoir to our friends and colleagues in Bordeaux and those from Canada, Brazil, and Japan who all came together for two weeks in an unprecedented heatwave in France to learn and grow together.

Today, we started the day with a few students trying canelés for the first time, then a train ride to Saint-Émilion and a beautiful day learning the history and visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site—the monolithic church, exploring the cobblestone streets, shops, and more wonderful food—crepes today.

Yesterday, we had a French lesson, played pétanque, visited Gradignan and their municipal winery featuring wine from the Medoc region, and then dinner.

Today was another beautiful day in Bordeaux. The French students planned a treasure hunt in the city, we enjoyed a nice traditional French meal, and visited the Musée d’Aquitaine. Tomorrow, French lessons and an opportunity to learn about Bordeaux as a wine region.
