The Country School

The Country School Built in 1915, this schoolhouse was the center of farm life for forty years. Moved and renovated in 2015, it keeps this community's history alive. Together.

As a home to just over 9,000 people in 1910 to a little more than 14,000 today, Pennington County has been built of small communities, treasured church families and beloved schools. This structure, the old Washington School District 221, was the first school for at least three generations of Smiley Township children. In 2015, the school moved down the road about two miles east from its original l

ocation. The building has been restored and enhanced in an effort to keep alive the memory and the history of this community’s dedication to learning.

It's been a wonderful five years hosting your parties and events!

But we find ourselves wishing for a slower pace and far less wear and tear on this historic structure and furnishings. To that end, we will devote our time and this building to what it was and should be: an educational and creative space.

Thanks again for all your good wishes and lovely comments over the years!
