Northland freshman Riley Livingston and sophomore Kameron Palmer won championships to lead the Northland men’s wrestling team at the Haw/Elton 4-Team Rumble held Saturday at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.
Livingston went 4-0 with a win by fall over and two major decisions on his way to winning the championship at 184 pounds. Competing in a five-man round-robin, Livingston defeated Casey Kennell of Nebraska Wesleyan 7-3 in the opening round, pinned Jared Steinley of the University of Saskatchewan in round two, and added wins by major decision over Layne Motley of the University of Saskatchewan and Braike Jones of Nebraska Wesleyan.
Wrestling unattached at 141 pounds, Palmer pinned Alfredo Hernandez of St. Johns and Northland teammate Tyler Witczak on his way to the championship.
Sophomores Qilee Jackson and Dalton Buffas added third-place finishes at 197 and 165, respectively. Jackson lost by fall to Carson Gellerman of St. Johns in the semifinal but came back to pin Habeeb Raji of Nebraska Wesleyan in the third-place match. Wrestling unattached, Buffas went 2-2 in a round-robin, with wins over Logan Hede of Nebraska Wesleyan and Josiah Solliday of St. Johns,
Sophomore Kale Geiser and freshman Jaxon Newton both bounced back from opening round losses to finish fifth in their respective weights. Geiser dropped a 13-2 major decision to Kris Castro of St. Johns in the quarterfinal round, but bounced back with wins by fall over Jack Hamilton of St. Johns and Joseph Piasecki of Nebraska Wesleyan. Newton lost by 10-2 major decision to Andrew Johnson of St. Johns in the quarterfinal round. He advanced to the consolation championship with a bye in the consolation semifinals and clinched a fifth-place finish with a win by fall over Diontrell Evans of Nebraska Wesleyan.
Also competing for the Pioneers were freshmen Ayden Floyd, fifth at 125; Tyler Witczak, third at 141; and sophomore Avant Jackson, fifth at heavyweight.
