Join us Tuesday, March 18th at 10 AM at The Pearl Chiropractic for a supportive, informative workshop with Holly (Speech & Language Pathologist) and Olivia (Lactation Consultant). Officially TOTS trained 🎉🎉🎉

I spent my weekend in Atlanta at TOTS Training® to bring home a deeper understanding of tethered oral tissues AKA lip, cheek, and tongue ties!

So thankful for the brilliant who provided us with so much information to help me better serve you and your little ones!

Odds are you’ve heard of a tongue tie from a mama friend, or you have experience with your own kiddo, but if you aren’t familiar..
Tethered oral tissues (TOTs) are restrictive tissues in the mouth that impact how you are able to use your mouth. This can negatively affect breast and bottle feeding, chewing/swallowing, speech, sleep, breathing… so many things!

It can be confusing because different providers will tell you different things, but it’s important to keep in mind that just because you have tissue or a “frenulum” doesn’t mean you have a true “tie”! It’s all about the function of the tissue.

If you are concerned your infant has an oral tie, trust your mommy gut and have it evaluated! We have awesome providers in our area that are TOTs trained that are dedicated to getting your little one on the right track 🤩

A wise colleague and friend of mine once told me to remove the word “normal” from my professional vocabulary and replace it with “common”.

Is it COMMON for breastfeeding moms to have ni**le pain? Absolutely! Is it NORMAL? No! Let’s stop telling moms they need to just power through the pain and start getting to the source of it!

Most commonly, ni**le pain occurs when your baby’s latch is either too shallow or is pinching your ni**le. Sometimes the fix is as easy as just changing positions! Other times, oral ties can be the culprit and this may be a more complicated problem.

If you are experiencing painful, bleeding, or cracked ni**les:
* try cross-cradle or football hold instead of the traditional cradle hold
* if your baby doesn’t let go of your ni**le after a feeding, gently place your finger into the side of your baby’s mouth to safely break the suction of the latch
* keep ni**les clean and dry — sometimes going braless when possible can help with healing.. moisture is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus and we don’t want mastitis or thrush!
* apply a thin layer of triple ni**le cream after feedings — equal parts anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and steroid creams which all work together towards healing!
* GET HELP!

Lactation workers can unfortunately get a reputation for having a “my way or the highway” attitude.

While I definitely think breastmilk and breastfeeding are SO important, it’s not my job to set your goals for you! My job is to help you on your unique journey, whatever you decide you want that to look like!

Whether you are exclusively breastfeeding, pumping, combo feeding, or totally formula and bottle feeding (that’s right, I can still help even if you are totally using a 🍼) .. it doesn’t matter to me! What I care about is that you feel heard, encouraged, and supported so you can make educated decisions for you and your little one.

If you feel like you need support, don’t hesitate to reach out! No matter what your journey looks like, you don’t have to be on it alone 🤍

When you and your cousin have lactation appointments together and you eat so well you just gotta take a nap 😏

Is your baby content after a feed? If not, this can be a sign of oral dysfunction or milk supply concerns!

Signs of a good feeding include:
- audible swallowing
- softer breasts after a feed
- pain free
- wide open mouth and round, full cheeks
- baby comes off the breast on their own when finished
- mouth looks moist after a feed
- baby seems satisfied and content (aka milk drunk 🤭)
