The Department of Social Sciences had a wonderful spring semester! We hope all of you have an excellent summer.

Students in Ms. Callais’ Inside/Out class visited campus to speak with Dr. Jefferson’s Criminology class!

We’re proud of the inside students for not only stepping into public speaking, but for the kind of vulnerability that can’t be taught- only lived and shared. They trusted a room full of strangers studying criminology with their stories, their pasts, and their humanity.

It’s one thing to learn from lectures and textbooks. It’s another to sit face-to-face with the realities behind the system, to feel the weight of lived experience, the complexity of choices, and the resilience it takes to move forward. Yesterday wasn’t just a discussion, it was a shift in perspective.

Moments like these are where real learning happens.

Congratulations, Dr. Whitney!

LPSO and the Nicholls Inside Out program hosted an open discussion today on campus about incarceration, misconceptions, the struggles of life, what led to incarceration, and how it’s changed them. This program pairs college students, or Outside students, with inmates, or Inside students who meet periodically to discuss a wide range of topics centered around criminal justice. All students were responsible are the same readings and an equal amount of writing.

Congratulations to our Department Head, Dr. David Whitney, on being awarded the Champion of Education Award at the Excellence Gala.

This event is a partnership with the Nicholls State University-Black History Month Committee and Thrive on the Bayou.
