As an advocate for a play-based approach to early childhood education (think block centers, sensory bins, water tables, Process-based art, dramatic center, and plenty of time outdoors) I’m often asked which schools I recommend here in the Woodlands area or where I’m sending my own children. It’s hard to believe I’ve only been here about a year but in that time I’ve discovered a few gems. I love The Early Learning Program of The Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church. That’s where my two kids, 18 months & 3 years old, started yesterday. It’s wonderfully play-based. I LOVE that they have a designated playground teacher who provides sensory and process- based art experiences outside on their amazing playground. It is Presbyterian affiliated. We also love the local Waldorf school, Great Oak School, which has no religious affiliation. I love their relationship to nature, a childhood lacking in screen time and noisy toys as well as their unheard of approach to literacy- they don’t teach it until 1st grade, which used to be the norm until the push down of academics. They have a wonderful parent child series we’re trying out. Ours is a cooking program and I look forward to their seasonal celebrations like the lantern walk and maypole spring celebration. I love that I continue to learn about more amazing little local schools, as I chat with like minded moms who share their own discoveries. So I wanted to share these discoveries with you here. For a Montessori approach check out The Grove Community School I also hear good things about an international school with a project-based approach called Cunae International School. Another friend recently told me about Magic Oak which looks to be play-based and bilingual; I’ll be curious to hear more about her experience. Have you discovered any MDO or preschool gems here in the Woodlands area? Please share your experience with us here.

Grade 11/12 Grade 9/10 Grade 7/8 A little communication goes a long way! Student's from grade 7-12 undertook class presentations for various subjects, and showcased some of their learning to their parents. This is done every term as we know teens often don't share what they are doing so this gives parents a little taste of student work. We followed this with a parent pot luck and wine night, and games for teens.

Edsi – Turtle Platform

Students build a raft for the turtles that live in one of our ponds. The use of tools features in many of our projects and students undergo safety training at the beginning of each year to ensure they understand how to use tools. Cunae has always found that putting tools in the hands of students enhances their confidence which has a runoff effect on their academics.

Owls Music Class

Sorry for poor quality, but listen to the music 🙂 In the Owl's music class they have been studying the orchestral piece "In the hall of the Mountain King" by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. They considered what methods the composer had used to tell the story through his music - using the concept of Tempo, Dynamics and Instrumentation. They then worked out the rhythmic patterns of the two themes. As a fun conclusion they enjoyed a rhythmic percussion play-along, carefully following their indicated parts - bravo Owls!!!
