The Woodlands Methodist School

The Woodlands Methodist School and Children of The Woodlands Methodist School provide an atmosphere of love and acceptance, where each child is recognized as a unique and special person created by God with the potential to grow and learn.

The program at The Woodlands Methodist School have been designed to promote the development of the whole child. Our rich classroom environments stimulate and challenge children. Our students question, investigate, experiment, create, and invent. In other words, the children learn by doing.

Operating as usual

See You at The Pole is an annual tradition at TWMS.

See You at the Pole™, the global day of student prayer, began in 1990 as a grass roots movement with ten students praying at their school. Twenty years later, millions pray on their campuses on the fourth Wednesday in September.

See You at the Pole™ is simply a prayer rally where students meet at the school flagpole before school to lift up their friends, families, teachers, school, and nation to God. See You at the Pole™ is a student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led event.

Students, staff and parents gathered before school on Wednesday, September 22nd for time of student led prayer. Thank you to all of the families that participated. It was a moving and beautiful morning!

On Tuesday, September 21st, nine students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. They joined eight existing members for the 2021-2022 school year. It is an honor and a privilege to be a member of the NJHS. Nominees have to go through a rigorous academic and application process.

Students complete over 40 service hours each year both in our school and in the community.

Congratulations to our new members! Keep up the great work!

Occasionally a student steps up to go “above and beyond” and becomes a light to their fellow students. For such occasions, we like to recognize these acts of kindness with the presentation of the SOAR Award. The SOAR Award is given to students for:

Showing Respect
Offering Help
Accepting Responsibility
Reflecting God’s Love

We had the honor of presenting this award to three students today: Beau, Emma and Gracie. They each stepped up and went above and beyond. Their actions made a difference in TWMS.

Staff Spotlight: Sandi McClanahan
Sandi is new for the 21/22 school year and has been a fabulous addition! Let's get to know her better.

1. How long have you been in your field?
I have been in the teaching field for 36 years. I have taught second grade, 5th and 6th grade language arts and now I can add first grade to my list.

2. What is something you learned in the last week?
In the past week, I have learned that no matter how many times you remind your first graders to use the restroom when time is available, they inevitably will wait until we are running late to decide they need to go.

3. What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
There is nothing else I have ever wanted to do for a career. However, I am looking forward to retiring in the hill country someday.

4. What three traits define you?
(1) Honest (2) Caring (3) Determined

5. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
If I could travel anywhere in the world, it would probably be somewhere in the South Pacific, maybe Tahiti or Bora Bora.

6. What is your favorite thing about working with The Woodlands Methodist School?
My favorite thing about working with The Woodlands Methodist School are my students. It’s so much fun to be around kids who actually love to come to school. They make my job so much fun.

7. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
If I could learn to do anything, I would love to be a fantastic cook, and actually like doing it.

A very special tradition at TWMS is to give all of our 3rd graders a new Bible. Each student is presented with a new Bible by our Children's Ministry team. The students were so excited and held the Bibles with such pride.

Last week, our National Junior Honor Society collected donations to help those affected by Hurricane Ida. Members collected items in car line each day. Donations from the school and the church were then sorted and packed into trucks to go to Louisiana. The donations were going to some of the hardest hit areas. Thank you for all our students and families who donated!

Monday Staff Spotlight
TWMS would like to introduce Shelly VanBethuysen. Shelly is our amazing Art Teacher. We are so grateful for her dedication to and love of art, that she demonstrates daily!

1. How long have you been in your field?
I’ve worked as an educator for 15 years. I’ve taught 3rd grade and Kindergarten. I’ve also worked as a tutor for grades K through 12th. This is my 2nd year as the Art Teacher here at TWMS.

2. What is something you learned in the last week?
This week I learned about Alcohol inks and how they react when you apply them to different surfaces. After playing around with them, I decided they would be fun to use for 5th/6th grades Dot Day Projects.

3. What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
I’ve never wanted to be anything other than a teacher. However, in my day dreams I imagine myself owning/running a beautiful Bed and Breakfast either in the mountains or at the beach where I cook breakfast every day and host themed dinners once a week. I might even let my husband help me😊

4. What three traits define you?
I am loyal, curious and loving. I will work tirelessly to meet the needs of my students and I am always looking for new ways to reach them. I’m not one for doing the same exact thing every year.

5. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would love to travel through Europe. I spent several years taking my daughter all over the world for fencing tournaments. Sadly we never got to go explore any of the places we visited. It would be amazing to go back and actually experience everything we missed.

6. What is your favorite thing about working with The Woodlands Methodist School?
My favorite part of working here is its smaller size. I feel like I’ve joined a family where I can connect with everyone rather than just a specific team. In public school there are so many people it’s often easy to get lost and feel like an island to yourself. Its been a real joy getting to know everyone here.

7. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I wish I could speak another language fluently. I can speak a bit of Spanish but I never pushed myself to become fluent.

Staff Spotlight - Karen McEvilly - Karen serves as our Instructional Technologist/Teacher and is an amazing addition to TWMS. Let's get to know her better!

1. How long have you been in your field?
I have been in the Technology field for 17 years.

2. What is something you learned in the last week? That God's timing is always perfect. On the same day that I planned to tech my Tech class about Clickbait we went to Chapel and the message was on Adam and Eve and temptation. The two fed into each other perfectly and I was able to bring that message into the class. A student even exclaimed the apple was clickbait! I love God Winks.

3. What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
I love research and analysis and helping people. So I would probably be a analyst for the police force.

4. What three traits define you?
1) Loyalty 2) Friendliness 3) Faithfulness

5. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would love to see Italy one day.

6. What is your favorite thing about working with The Woodlands Methodist School?
The staff, undeniably. You can go to anyone, anytime and they are there for you. I have not ever encountered a more loving, supporting staff in my career.

7. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Believe it or not - swim!

Monday Staff Spotlight - Martin Bayang. Martin is not only amazing at his job, but humble as well. He assists TWMS on a daily basis with IT support and leadership. He is a true example of putting others first. Thank you Martin for everything you do for us!

1. How long have you been in your field?
I have been in the technology field for over 25 years, holding positions of programmer, robotics engineer, systems engineer, project manager, data center manager and IT director.

2. What is something you learned in the last week?
Something interesting I learned last week is that there is now an Eagle Scout grandparents pin. It is relatively new and was not available when my son received his Eagle Scout award. My father was very excited when my nephew presented it to him.

3. What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
If I were not IT, I would be working in the biomechanics field. Having a Mechanical Engineering degree, an interest in robotics and mother who was a registered nurse, it’s no wonder that biomechanics would be something I would want to pursue.

4. What three traits define you?
Determined, hard-working, dedicated

5. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
The Philippines

6. What is your favorite thing about working with The Woodlands Methodist School?
My favorite thing about working at the Woodlands Methodist School is working with the faculty and staff and knowing that I am supporting a team of dedicated people trying to help better children’s lives.

7. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
To be still. (The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14).
