As we celebrate the Fourth of July, let us take to heart the first words of the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
As they deliberated about what an independent America should look like, the Founding Fathers were guided and inspired by the ancient Greek principles of democracy and incorporated them into our Constitution. When, some decades later, the Greeks made ready to fight for their freedom against another oppressor, they in turn were guided and inspired by the success of the American Revolution.
May you and your loved ones have a glorious Fourth, and may we all remember to give thanks to our Creator for the abundant blessings we enjoy as citizens of a free society.
