The new 2020-2021 8th grade McC cheer squad made this picture message for their teachers and friends.

A team from McCullough was selected as ExploraVision 2020 Regional Winners! Owen Plourde and Raphaela De Marchi Padovanis’ project, Engineering C. reinhardtii to Biodegrade the Pollutant Polyethylene Terephthalate will advance to the National phase of the competition. You can view the announcement and their abstract here.

ExploraVision is the largest K-12 science competition designed to build problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. This year’s challenge was to create a vision of a new technology. For thier submission, Owen and Raphaeila completed extensive research which included interviewing international scientists, submitting an 18 page science paper and producing a mock website detailing the problem and their futuristic solution.

Judged by a panel of science and engineering experts, Owen and Raphaela's ExploraVision project was chosen from over 5,000 entries to be one of only six 7th-9th grade teams that will now go on to compete for the National award. They have already won some exciting prizes at the regional level including a Toshiba Laptop for McCullough JHS and Echo dots for each of them, but if they are named National Winners they will each receive an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to showcase their innovation and a $10,000 U.S. Savings bond each.

Owen and Raphaela were able to celebrate their accomplishment and share their brilliant project with their teachers in a Zoom conference last week. We are very proud of their hard work and are cheering them on! NSTA Toshiba America

The Neuroscience of High-Risk Behavior

Topic Description: The average age of first use of alcohol for teen boys is 11 and 13 for teen girls. More teens are suffering from depression than any other time in our history. What is happening in our culture and to our children’s development? The Neuroscience of High-Risk Behavior teaches students and parents how substances and other high-risk behaviors such as alcohol/drugs, food addiction, and technology overuse affect healthy brain development and how to prevent children and adolescents from engaging in such risky behavior.

Speaker - Dr. Crystal Collier is a therapist, researcher, and educator. She created a comprehensive prevention model to teach the neurodevelopmental effects of risky behavior to children, teens, and parents which was selected for the 2015 Prevention and Education Commendation from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and was given the Torch Bearer of the Year Award by the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals in 2018.
