Today we are sketching our local trees. Nature rained on us so we all ran inside and are looking out the window! We have been observing trees throughout the seasons. What do trees look like in the spring? What do you know about trees in the spring?
Our sixth graders had an incredible field trip to the rodeo! They have been studying agriculture all year. The class adopted a calf that lives in Kansas, and have been tracking its growth for many months. They came prepared with a lot of questions and it was a phenomenal learning experience which culminated with the birth of a calf!
Our students are learning important skills for their future in Coding/Robotics class. The K-1 group is coding robots that must go through a maze that they create. The grade 2-3 group is learning the basics of coding with Scratch, the coding program developed by MIT. Grades 4 and up are learning to code with Python, and how to use ChapGPT and other AI programs to enhance learning. They all enjoy using our interactive robots!
During Black History Month, our students were inspired by many black Americans as they completed research and learned their stories. Our grade 6 students recreated this art piece below inspired by Jacqueline Woodson, an award winning author and poet.
Today our kindergarten and grade 1 classes visited the Friends of Texas Wildlife Education Center in Magnolia. We learned about animal adaptations such as mimicry and camouflage. We met many animal ambassadors such as Fred, the Red-Tailed Hawk, and Scarlet, the Milk Snake. A big thank you to Cathie Coudert, Friends of Texas Wildlife Education Coordinator, and Jaden Kelly, Program Specialist at the Texas A&M Forest Service. We highly recommend visiting them!
As part of our celebration of Black History Month, the second and third grade students learned about the work of Alma Thomas. They were inspired to create their own paintings using a similar style.
Alma Woodsey Thomas (Septemeber 22, 1891 - February 24, 1978) was an African American artist and teacher. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New Yorkβs Whitney Museum of American Art, and she exhibited her paintings at the White House three times.
"I've never bothered painting the ugly things in life...People struggling, having difficulty...No, I wanted something beautiful that you could sit down and look at." - Alma Thomas
Yesterday, we had our February coffee morning with our parents led by Amy Drury, founder of Joyful Hearts Play Therapy & Counseling Center, LLC. We discussed how to best support children through life's changes. We also learned some new ways to set boundaries at home for screen time and still maintain the peace. We all walked away with new tools and strategies to help our children. Amy, you are the BEST! Thank you :)
Today, our K/1 class presented their Museum: Texas Animals. They have been reading, writing, and learning about Texas animals over the past several weeks. They also created replica s**t, or p**p, to add to the museum display. That was of course one of their favorite activities! They taught their parents and other students a lot about Texas animals.
We are growing and we need teachers! If you are a passionate, dedicated, creative teacher and tired of standardized tests, come and visit us! We are now accepting resumes. All applicants must have a degree in education. Email your resume to [email protected]

Here are the "One Word Resolutions" for a few of our students. These are the words they chose as a reminder to focus and improve their life in some way this year. For example, the boy (age 9) that chose the word "Simple" said that he often overthinks things in life, and he wants to remember to keep it simple this year. Taking care our yourself and constantly working to reach a greater sense of inner peace and happiness - these are the most important lessons of all.
Yesterday, a group of 4th graders enthusiastically presented their Texas History Concept Map Project. We were impressed by their deep understanding of various important events they have studied. During their learning, they made a Lego replica of the Alamo, presented in-character as a chosen influential person in TX history, studied the regions of TX through the lens of a paleontologist studying dinosaur fossils, and enjoyed many other highly engaging experiences.
Thank you to Mr. Mike, Ms. Mary and our amazing students for putting on such energy-filled performances during our holiday theater and music shows. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!
Thank you to Julie at The Ardest Gallery for hosting our visit with children's book illustrator Robyn Crowell. She read from her book written by Daniel Klawitter, The Trickster: Poems for Very Clever Children and Silly Adults. She encouraged our students to keep a sketchpad handy and practice every day if they are passionate about drawing like she was as a child. This was such a special treat!
Happy Thanksgiving!
We have so much to be thankful for, especially our incredibly compassionate students, staff, and all of our families.
This week, we were packing up care packages to send to our troops deployed overseas. Thank you for all of your donations to make this possible.
Enjoy this special day celebrating with friends and family.
Happy Veteran's Day! This week, our students learned about the different branches of our military and what it is that they do to protect our country. They also shared stories of military veterans in their families. Next, we are sending care packages to our soldiers deployed across the world. Flat Stanley will be traveling in the packages with a note for the recipients to let us know where he ends up. This ties in well with our study of world geography.
Thank you to The Ardest Gallery for hosting our parent coffee this morning! Our topic this month is Growth Mindset Conversations With Your Child. We had a rich discussion and left with several ideas and activities to try at home. A special thank you to artist Jeff Lung for giving us a personal tour of the gallery and showing us his amazing work as well.
Thank you to Dr. Spears and Dr. Elder for a fantastic field trip to the Lone Star College -University Park Campus. We visited their Biology Lab, Earth Science Lab, and learned more about Meteorology that we have been studying at school. We also visited the Innovation Lab where they have 3D printers, a Virtual Reality platform, and many other state of the art machines. The students had so much fun, and are now excited to go to college since there are so many fun toys there!
Today was our Jr. Entomologist Class #3 for The Woodlands Discovery Nature School. We learned about our native pollinators, and what we can do to help our local insect population. We also enjoyed an informative and entertaining presentation from Kevin at Big Thicket Beekeeping. Although honeybees are not native to North America, there sure are fascinating!

Did you know that the insect population worldwide is declining at an alarming rate? We are working with local scientists from Rice University and Sam Houston State University to evaluate our population of arthropods in The Woodlands and learn what we can do to help stabilize it.
This morning, the participants used insect aspirators to capture insects to observe and count. We have many budding entomologists!
Our students started their Jr. Entomologist Classes yesterday! We learned about the declining population of insects around the world. With the guidance of entomologists from Rice University and Sam Houston State University, we are beginning to do our part to help turn this around in our area. The bug vacuums were of course the best part :)
