Rethinking Coaching As A Leadership Tool 10/03/2025

Happy Fall & happy October! 🎃

Leadership in higher education isn’t what it used to be.
From enrollment pressures to hybrid learning, today’s academic leaders are navigating seismic shifts—and many are doing so without the support they truly need.

Executive coaching is emerging as a critical lever for resilience, strategic clarity, and institutional impact. As this Forbes article explains, coaching isn’t just a skill—it’s a strategic imperative.

“Coaching is the art of asking thoughtful questions rather than providing direct answers… cultivating curiosity and letting leaders own their achievements.” But in higher ed, where leaders often rise through academic excellence rather than formal leadership training, coaching fills a vital gap.

Let’s stop treating coaching as a luxury. It’s time to embed it into the DNA of leadership development across our institutions.

⬇️ Share your thoughts: how can we facilitate these conversations with clients and ensure that coaching is not part of HR but at the core of the mission/vision/values??

Rethinking Coaching As A Leadership Tool While coaching is undoubtedly a powerful leadership method, understanding when and how to use it is crucial. Misapplication can confuse employees or even erode trust.

On this day, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the countless families forever changed.
We honor the first responders, healthcare workers, and everyday people who chose courage over fear. May our remembrance be active—expressed in service, unity, and care for one another.

See you next year back in Houston!

Great leaders know that performance isn’t just about pushing harder—it’s about knowing when to step back and recharge. Rest is not a luxury; it’s a strategic advantage. Here’s why:

1️⃣ Mental Clarity and Better Decision-Making
Leadership demands. Fatigue clouds thinking and impairs decision-making. Taking the weekend to reset allows you to step into the new week with fresh perspective and clarity.

2️⃣ Sustaining Long-Term Performance
Burnout doesn’t announce itself until it’s too late. Rest helps maintain energy levels and resilience for the challenges ahead. Weekend rest isn’t just recovery—it’s preparation.

3️⃣ Creativity and Innovation Thrive in Rest
Some of the best ideas come when you step away from work. When you rest, your subconscious continues to connect ideas and solve problems—often when you least expect it.

4️⃣ Modeling Healthy Habits for Your Team
As a leader, you set the tone for your team’s work-life balance. When you prioritize rest, it gives others permission to do the same, creating a healthier, more engaged workplace culture.

So, take the weekend to rest, reflect, and restore. Leadership is a marathon, not a sprint. Monday will thank you for it.
