Aston and Camille are our October Students of the Month! They have been taking lessons for 3 years and study with Ms. Melanie. They both like to play popular pop songs like "Shake It Off" because they recognize the songs, but they also like playing more classical pieces since it's a bit more challenging! Both Camille and Aston play golf and tennis. Aston started playing saxophone last year as well, and he's excelled with his background knowledge of piano and how to read music.

Great job, Aston and Camille!

Does playing music in front of people feel scary?

We get it. Performing is a vulnerable and scary moment for anyone. But, like any skill, it takes time and practice to become more comfortable with it. Your teacher will have advice and experience from battling performance anxiety. There are exercises, tips, and tricks that will help you feel more confident and prepared!

Darren is one of our incredibly multi-talented instructors. We're proud to have him and excited to highlight him!

Darren “Mr. Classical” Thompson is a master pianist from Yonkers, NY. Darren has been playing piano for 24 years and teaching for 3 years. Since starting his musical studies at the age of eight, music has taken Darren around the country and around the world from performing in Connecticut, New York, North Carolina, to South Korea, Costa Rica, and Mexico. He has completed his degree in Business Management in New York, NY. Since relocating to Katy, Texas, has pursued his love of collaborative music through performances at popular restaurants, festivals, and events within Katy and Houston.

Darren splits his time away from the piano by personal training and enjoying Katy’s agriculture and weather.

Labor Day is right around the corner! Reminder that Lessons on the Go does not have any regularly scheduled closures. Please be sure you are communicating with your instructor about whether you will have lessons during holiday weeks, etc.

Have a wonderful weekend and a great Labor Day! 🇺🇸

We frequently get the question, "Is my 3-5 year old ready for private piano/voice/guitar/violin/etc.?"

Of course, it depends on the individual child, but if you find yourself hoping to enroll your little one into private music lessons in the near future, Music Explorers might be the perfect place to start.

Music Explorers is a fabulous preparation to a more formal individual music instruction as the child grows. This class has a rich music curriculum that will comfortably segue young students onto a continued path of music education. Musical concepts such as steady beat, tone matching, listening skills, coordination, musical vocabulary, singing and playing classroom instruments are all taught by a music education professional.

One of the best ways to be more involved in your child's musical journey is to have regular discussions with their teacher. It's that easy!

By knowing what your child is working on, excelling at, struggling with, and interested in, you'll be able to help guide them more at home. Whether that's in practice, listening to recordings, or whatever!

Are you looking to take the next step in your musical skills? If you're taking 30-minute lessons, adding an extra 15 or 30 minutes to your weekly lesson time will make a HUGE difference! Try it for a bit and see if it works for you!

Playing the guitar can be a challenge for smaller hands and little fingers. If your child has a love for guitar but isn't quite big enough to handle it comfortably yet, starting with a Ukulele is a great way to go. This will introduce them to similar basic concepts and allow them to graduate to guitar once they're big enough!

Learning to play the violin allows students to play in orchestras or chamber groups. This helps to train their ears, group skills, and more! We love watching our students participate in youth orchestras at their schools or otherwise. Such a fun and great experience!

Y'all, we're not sure what's going on here. We're either sword fighting with some post-recital flowers, or we've invented a new way of saying, "good job!" Maybe it's both?

Either way, it looks like fun! 😊

Get 'em on stage early!

Pushing your kid to perform in front of a recital audience is a great way to help them build confidence. At an LOTG recital, our families are the BEST and so supportive of each student. Our students have a great time and learn so much from doing it!

Most musicians have more fun playing music when it's music they love listening to.

By practicing and playing styles that you enjoy, you'll be more motivated to return to your instrument time and time again!

When a child learns music, they're also developing their language skills, increasing their IQs, improving their spatial-temporal abilities, all while increasing their overall musical skills.

The earlier a child start to learn music, the more their brain can build interesting and unique musical connections for life!

You can't make true progress without clearly establishing a goal first.

Having a goal helps you understand where you started, and plan for what you need to do to "get there."

Want your child to audition into their school band next year? Want to play your spouse a song for your anniversary?

One of our amazing teachers will help you figure it all out, from beginning to end. Just give us a call!

You're a busy parent. You love your kids more than anything, but adding something else to the calendar just isn't an option... or is it?

By taking lessons from the comfort of your own home, you know that your child is -

1) Safe
2) Having a great time
2) Getting a top-notch education

We work with your schedule to make sure everything is taken care of. Don't wait, call us today and hear all about the benefits of lessons from home!

Calvin Lee, violin teacher, musician, educator, and orchestral conductor, joined the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts from Education University of Hong Kong in 2014. A native of Hong Kong, Dr. Lee is a post-doctoral Fellow of Violin Instruction, Music Theory, Music History, Orchestral Conductor and Music Education Researcher at The Education University of Hong Kong. He received his Bachelor's and first Master's degrees from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He continued his studies at the Education University of Hong Kong, receiving a Master of Arts and a Ph. D. in Music Education.

Calvin's experience as a violin teacher goes back a long way before he attended the Education University of Hong Kong. Calvin has over 20 years of experience teaching violin at Mozart Music Education Center. In this position, Calvin taught students from Pre-K to 12 inclusively. During this valuable frontline experience, Calvin learned the importance of evolvability for a good music teacher. Beginners need teachers who are warm, enthusiastic, and generate interest and enthusiasm. For immediate level students, they always need knowledgeable criticism to create respect. Finally, for advanced level students, master-apprentice relationship and introducing them into professional circles sounds most important to them.

Calvin gives public lectures and adjudicates all types of music events at the community level. As a musician and father, he has been invited to share his parenting experience in a television program. Further, Calvin has been invited to adjudicate in numerous music competitions, including the Hong Kong Schools Music Award Competition, the Joint School Music Association Competition, and the Inter-School International Performance Challenge. Dr. Lee has always been committed to promoting music education.

Here are four quick tips to improve any practice session! 🎶

⌚️ Consistency - Dedicate regular time to practice. Make it a habit and watch your skills soar!
🧱 Break it down - Break your music into smaller sections. Master each part before putting it all together!
🎶 Set goals - Define what you want to achieve and draw a roadmap to get there. Goal-oriented practice drives progress.
🌏 Find your tribe: Connect with other musicians, attend workshops, and join online communities. Learn from as many others as you can!

Happy practicing!

Thank you to all who served. We honor and remember you today, and all days.

In-home lessons are a fantastic option for busy families. No more driving in traffic each way. No more coordinating who's going where at what time. No more letting dinner get cold! 🥶

If you and your family could use a few more hours back in your day, and love learning music, reach out today and start learning music FROM HOME! 🏡

Alison is our May student of the month! She takes piano lessons with Ms. Katrina, and has been studying piano for about 10 months. Currently, her favorite song to play is Jingle Bells. Outside of piano, she also likes to sing and wants to learn how to play the violin.

Thank you for being you, Alison! You're amazing! 😊

A warm welcome to our newest voice teacher, Layne Roberts! 🥳

A graduate of Sam Houston School of Music (Go Bearkats! 🦁), she received her Bachelor of Arts in Music degree in 2016 and has been teaching private voice lessons since. As a teacher, she understands that it takes time to cultivate a new skill. She is enthusiastic and patient with all of her students. She believes in strong collaboration between teacher and student. Building trust and confidence is the foundation of that relationship. Aside from teaching, Ms. Roberts is an actively performing musician in the Houston area. She looks forward to sharing her knowledge and experiences with her students of all ages, and we are so excited to have her!!

Please take a moment and tell her, "welcome!!"

Why is it so important for our students to play in our recitals?

1️⃣ First, they give students an end goal. Working on a piece of music? Play it at our recital!
2️⃣ Next, playing in front of an audience helps build confidence. Playing in front of friends and family makes it even easier!
3️⃣ Lastly, it gives our families a chance to hear all of our wonderful students and hear the progress that each one of them have worked so hard to achieve.

We love watching our students play at recitals!!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to the incredible music teachers of Lessons on the Go! Thank you for inspiring our students to find their passion for music and for sharing your talents with us all. Your dedication and hard work make a difference every day. Here's to the amazing educators who help make our community so special! 🎵👨‍🏫👩‍🏫

Practicing 10 minutes a day, every day, is always better than practicing 30-35 minutes twice a week. Even though it adds up to about the same amount of time, building consistency is a much bigger accomplishment than just getting the time in. Not only that, but your brain continues to learn even when you're away from the instrument!

Have you encouraged your young musician to start a band with their friends? If not, that would be a great chance to have friends over, work on their musical skills, and have some fun! Creating a positive and affirming environment around music helps establish a healthy relationship with it for life!
