Fall is on its way to Etten’s Eden, and we need to make some room!

Watercolors in the Garden is finally here!

So many of you have asked us to offer a watercolor workshop, and we are thrilled to finally make it happen this Friday at Etten’s Eden.

Even more exciting, this will be the very first workshop held in Comfrey Cottage, our new Floral Arts Studio. We can’t think of a more fitting way to open the doors to this new creative space.

We are delighted to welcome accomplished Piedmont artist Patty Craighill to lead the workshop. Patty has been drawing and painting since childhood and has spent decades developing her work in watercolor, oil and charcoal. Inspired by the gardens, landscapes and horse farms of Virginia’s Piedmont, her work has been exhibited throughout the region and in New York City.

WATERCOLORS IN THE GARDEN
Friday, August 28
Begins promptly at 4:00 PM
$75 per person
Space is limited to 20 participants

Patty will lead approximately two hours of guided watercolor instruction. Those who would like additional painting time are welcome to stay until 7:00 PM.

All skill levels are welcome. Bring your own watercolor supplies if you have them. Beginner supplies will be available to borrow.

Etten’s Eden will provide fresh flowers for inspiration, and after painting, participants will be able to select flowers to create a small arrangement to take home.

Come paint, learn and create with us as we celebrate the very first workshop at Comfrey Cottage.

I think I’ve found my new mission in life: finding interesting and unique containers and turning them into gardens.

I spotted this fabulous old grain bin at Tavern Antiques in Aldie and simply couldn’t resist. I brought it back to the nursery and handed it over to the ladies to work their magic.

And look what happened!

It has me wondering… what do YOU have sitting around that could become a beautiful container garden?

What does a garden mean to you?

Just a few weeks ago, this beautiful early-1900s Meadowbrook cart was weathered, worn, and patiently waiting for its next chapter.

A special thank you to Tracey Smith, one of our talented team members, whose creativity and passion for plants brought this display to life. With a thoughtfully curated collection of flowering plants, she transformed this historic cart into a beautiful garden vignette that perfectly captures the spirit of Etten's Eden.

It's a wonderful reminder that with a little vision, beautiful plants, and thoughtful design, something old can become something truly inspiring.

A little behind the scenes of how we choose what comes to Etten’s Eden.

We recently traveled to New Jersey to visit two wholesale growers, including the opportunity to attend an incredible plant trial. What an experience!

These trials are reserved for members of the horticulture trade, including growers, breeders, brokers and garden center buyers. Being invited to attend was truly an honor.

Imagine an area larger than a football field filled with plants. Then imagine seeing some of your favorite plant species with four, five or more different cultivars growing right next to one another.

This is where it gets really interesting.

We can compare color, foliage, flower size, growth habit, overall size and performance. Even better, we can see what the plants look like at mature growth rather than making decisions based solely on catalog photographs.

And sometimes the differences are remarkable!

All of this helps us decide which varieties we want to order and bring to Etten’s Eden for the coming season.

We visited two growers during our trip and came home with plenty of notes, photographs and ideas. I cannot wait to bring some of these new selections to the garden center next spring.
