Department of Medicine Statement About the Mass Shooting in Buffalo
Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the people of Buffalo in the aftermath of this sickening act of domestic terrorism, fueled by racism, hatred, and easy access to fi****ms.
We stand in solidarity with the Buffalo community and all communities of color, who, every day in this country, are targets of hatred and discrimination.
We must not be complacent. If we learn about threats to public safety, we should notify local authorities.
Racism is a healthcare crisis in society and has no place in America. It must end.

WHEN DOWN IS UP
Montefiore Einstein Physician Leaders are
Lowering Blood Pressure in a Novel Way
The community Montefiore Einstein serves has some of the highest rates of hypertension in New York City. Identifying and monitoring people is critical. But there is a challenge to doing that if patients aren’t making regular visits to the doctor. And even if they are, taking a patient’s blood pressure once or twice a year does not give a clear and accurate account of what is happening every day. This can lead to adverse outcomes such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.
Clinicians and researchers at Montefiore Einstein want to preempt that. They started a Quality Improvement Initiative: Remote Patient Monitoring Program for Hypertension (RPM-HTN) that seeks to improve blood pressure control, which affects more than 100,000 of Montefiore’s patients, and to test the viability of remote monitoring for the disease.

Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, the strain to hospital systems and staff has been huge. Stress, in some form or other, is ever present. For many, self-care has fallen by the wayside, leading to incremental levels of burn out. As an infectious disease specialist, Dr. Michèle Halpern has had a front row seat to global epidemics but COVID took it to another level. One of the ways she copes with stress and finds balance is through her special interest in music, in particular singing and song-writing. She wrote a song about COVID, adapting the music from a famous Bach cello suite, which she chose for its exquisite beauty, sobriety yet complexity. Take a listen
