On May 13, 2026, the Latin American and Latino Studies Department proudly hosted its Recognition Ceremony in collaboration with our colleagues from IPCE (Office of International Programs & Community Engagement.)

This special moment honored the hard work, resilience, and accomplishments of our graduating students. We are especially proud to recognize our award recipients, Gabriel Bencosme and Esinned Ortega, whose dedication and commitment have left a lasting impact on our community.

As they begin their next chapter, we celebrate not only their academic achievements but also the passion, leadership, and cultural pride they have shared with us throughout their journey.

✨Cool Things Going On At LALS😎

Professor Glorimarie Pena Alicea shares her course.

LAC 225/HIT 225:LAC 225: History of the Dominican Republic
This course focuses on key historical events that form the history, culture, and society of the country from the Taíno’s Society (1492) until the first US occupation of the Dominican Republic (1916-1924) and the Rise of Trujillo (1930), to then understand the Dominican Nation and the contemporary Dominican culture and society. Throughout the discussion and analysis of different sources of information (traditional and non-traditional), students will learn about the important historical events that have shaped the Dominican nation in the present, in terms of class, race, and gender, and in areas such as music, tourism, migration, and sports, among other topics.

This course isn’t traditional: it is a project-based course. Instead of exams, students complete reflections, participate in discussion boards, and have the opportunity to complete an oral history project on history and the Dominican community in New York, where they can apply the knowledge they acquire in class. Some tasks are done in person, and others are done online. Students take ownership of their learning through class discussions, oral presentations, and the oral history project.
