your kid isn’t hitting because they’re violent.
they aren’t yelling because they’re disrespectful.
they aren’t talking back because they’re manipulative.
and they aren’t having a meltdown because they’re trying to ruin your day.

i think one of the biggest mistakes we make as parents is assuming the behavior IS the problem.

the behavior is the clue.

the behavior is the bloom.

because underneath the hitting might be a need for autonomy.

underneath the yelling might be feeling unheard.

underneath the refusal might be a need for control in a world where adults make almost every decision.

underneath the meltdown might be a nervous system that’s completely overwhelmed.

kids are constantly communicating with us.

the problem is that they’re not always using words.

and if all we focus on is stopping the behavior, we miss the message.

that doesn’t mean there aren’t boundaries.

it doesn’t mean we excuse hurtful behavior.

it means we stop asking,

“how do i make this behavior stop?”

and start asking,

“what is this behavior trying to tell me?”

because behavior is communication.

and when we understand the roots, the bloom starts to make a whole lot more sense.
