Did you know milkweed grows around the pond at The Peaks? This plant helps keep pollinators happy and healthy, which supports biodiverse plant, insect, and animal populations.

You might recognize milkweed as the host plant of the Monarch Butterfly! Turns out they aren't the only orange butterflies that enjoy this important plant 🦋

Today’s fun find is the Saddleback Caterpillar 🐛

Named for the saddle-shaped patch on its back, this grub is one of the more unique finds you might come across at The Peaks. Its scientific name, Acharia stimulea, means “spur,” referencing the horn-like projections and stinging spines that cover its body.

While these caterpillars may seem intimidating, they play an important role in nature by helping regulate plant growth as they feed on leaves from oak, elm, and walnut trees.

Keep an eye out next time you hit the trails...just remember this is a look-don’t-touch kind of critter 🛑
