We at PLACE are excited to share some of our upcoming events for this semester — including two happening this week!

🎬 PLACE Movie Night: Wednesday, February 18 | 5:30 PM | UC 210

Join us for our first Movie Night of the semester as we watch Dr. Strangelove.
Pizza and snacks will be provided!

🍽️ Food for Thought: Thursday, February 19 | 12:15–1:00 PM | Library Commons (3rd Floor)

Dr. Daniel Mintun will lead a discussion titled “The End is Always Near: Nuclear Weapons and Doomsday Devices.”
Lunch will be provided for the first 25 attendees, along with snacks and engaging conversation!

Join us tomorrow (Thursday, September 4th), as we kick off our "Food for Thought" series! The event will take place in the Library Commons (3rd floor) from 12:15 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Light refreshments and coffee will be provided!

Tomorrow will feature our very own Dean of the Honors College, Dr. Craig Nakashian, who will be leading a discussion titled “From Tricorders to Terminators: Imagining the Technology of the Future”. This will be the starting point as we delve into the intricacies of our theme for this year, "Science, Technology, and Society."

So please join us tomorrow and save the dates for all future PLACE events!

Join us this Thursday, April 10th, as we welcome Danielle Hanson, this year's PLACE Poet Speaker, to TAMUT. Danielle will be hosting a generative writing workshop and a reading this Thursday evening (details below). Both events are open to all in the community, so please share with friends, family, colleagues, and students! Refreshments will be provided.

Danielle Hanson's poetry explores a world of tricks and illusions--everything is an object to be played with: light, absence, mythology, rocks, and animals. The poems are rooted in magical realism and nature, if they're rooted at all. But the speaker of the poem dismantles the world and puts it back together in communities like little Frankenstein's monsters. There are love poems, saints complaining about their Heaven, body parts disassembled and put to use in a surrealistic bending of reality, elegies to animals loved and unloved, and odes to nature and natural forces. And plenty of birds that are rather unbirdlike.

Join us tomorrow, Thursday, March 27th, at TAMUT's beautiful Texarkana campus for an event titled "Civic Engagement in the Twin Cities: A Panel Discussion with Texarkana Leaders." TAMUT's very own Jay Davis, Executive Director of Financial and Entrepreneurship Engagement, will serve as moderator, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of our panelists.

Topics that will be covered include, but are not limited to:
- Challenges and opportunities in Texarkana
- Bi-State Collaboration
- Strategies for increasing community engagement
- Opportunities for residents to get involved and make a difference

We promise this event will be worth your while if you are able to attend, and there will be food provided for the first 80 attendees! Please share with your friends, family, and colleagues!

We are excited about PLACE’s initial event for this spring semester. Dr. Derek Buckaloo, a Howard Hall Professor of History at Coe College, will present a lecture this Thursday, February 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Eagle Hall. The title of his lecture is "Changing America: The Spirit and 'The Strands' of Sixties Activism". If you can attend this lecture, I assure you that you will find it worthwhile. There will be food provided for the first 80 attendees!

Join us tonight as we continue our "Decoding Democracy" series!

Tonight, Dr. Ayal Feinberg joins us from Gratz College, where he is the Director of the Center for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights. His research has been cited in U.S. Congress in front of the House Judiciary Committee, and his work has been utilized by practitioners and policymakers concerned with the insecurity of marginalized groups. In this talk, Dr. Feinberg will help us break down the complexities of the Middle East's current conflict(s) and explain how it will impact U.S. politics heading into the 2024 election.

PLACE has a jam-packed week of programming that we are excited to share with you. First, we continue our "Decoding Democracy" series with events on Wednesday and Thursday this week with guests Dr. Ayal Feinberg and Dr. Amy Friesenhahn.

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024 (6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.)
Dr. Ayal Feinberg (Gratz College) – Guest Speaker – “Much Ado About Middle East Turmoil: Implications for the 2024 U.S. Election” – Eagle Hall

Dr. Amy Friesenhahn (Texas Woman’s University), Dr. Ayal Feinberg (Gratz College) – Symposium - “Making Sense of the 2024 Election” - Eagle Hall

Are you feeling overwhelmed by politics and the U.S. election? Do you wish there were a couple of experts willing to answer your questions surrounding the current state of politics and the upcoming election in a judgment-free environment? Well, PLACE has you covered. We invite back Dr. Feinberg as well as Dr. Amy Friesenhahn from Texas Woman's University to candidly discuss what they are seeing in this leading up to November 5th and where there are similarities and differences from previous elections. They will also be there to answer any questions you may have regarding U.S. politics and the upcoming election.

We also continue our "Food for Thought" discussion series in the Library Commons this Thursday at 12:15 p.m. This week, Dr. Joy Hutchinson from our counseling program will lead us in a discussion titled "Navigating Tough Conversations with Friends and Family."

Join us this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. as we kick off our "Decoding Democracy" series with guest speaker Dr. Joshua Montgomery from the University of Texas at Dallas.

In this talk, Dr. Montgomery will address the rise and fall of objectivity as a journalistic standard and the ascent of advocacy journalism. A consequence of this evolution is the polarization of America's newsrooms, which facilitates misreporting, social distancing, and a growing distrust between news producers and the public. He will also discuss a few possible solutions to these challenges.
