Take a deep breath. Calm yourself. Focus on the Kingdom Objective and the PLAN, not the obstacles that stand in the way.

ARE THERE TWO STICKS - OR IS THERE REALLY JUST ONE?

This week the prophet whom the sages would have us consult is one of the 'majors': Yechezkiel the kohen, son of Buzi. Well over a millennium after Yechezkiel lived and prophesied, the Hebrew-to-English translators that had been commissioned by King James of England decided to rename/rebrand him with a more English-sounding moniker - so most today know the august fellow as 'Ezekiel'. One of this prophet's famous visions - described in detail in his book at chapter 37, beginning with verse 15 - is the vision of TWO STICKS. The Holy One tells Yechezkiel to take two sticks, to write on one 'FOR YEHUDAH and for his companions of B'nei Yisrael' and to write on the other 'FOR YOSEF, the tree of Efrayim, and for his companions of all Beit Yisrael'. Then Yechezkiel was to join the two sticks together, to make them one.

What do you think it means? Who - and where - are 'B'nei Yisrael', whom the Holy One associates with Yehudah; and who - and where - are 'Beit Yisrael', whom the Holy One associates with Yosef through Efrayim? What differentiates B'nei Yisrael from Beit Yisrael? And, most importantly, what will it take for them to be reunited?

IT IS TIME FOR A GREAT PARADIGM SHIFT; INSTEAD OF BEMOANING THAT WHICH IS HAPPENING, LOOK AHEAD TO THE 'END-GAME', AND REJOICE!

It is the week of parsha Va'etchanan [i.e. and I sought grace], and that means our annual seven week period of consolation and comfort that lead up to the Great Day of Trumpet Blasts has finally arrived. How does 'Isaiah' [real name 'Yeshayahu'] inaugurate the great Seven-Part 'Kingdom End-Game' Discourse?

PREPARE THE WAY OF THE HOLY ONE . . .

There are different traditions regarding what prophetic reading best completes the narrative of parsha Sh’mot. The Ashkenazi tradition is to read and meditate on Yeshayahu 27:6-28:1.

Yeshayahu - i.e. ‘Isaiah’ - prophesies of the great Second Exodus to come – a glorious day to come when a great shofar will be blown;
and both those who were lost and ready to perish in the land of Assyria and those who are being driven out to the land of Egypt, will all come and will worship the Holy One on the holy mountain at Jerusalem.

Do not lose hope! Do not imagine that you and your progeny have been forsaken! Do not embrace the vain imaginations that the princes of darkness and despair win out in the end. That is not the way this is going to turn out. There will be another great deliverance - and another miraculous ingathering of souls. He will stun those who seem to be, and think they are, in power - and He will bring us together, bone upon bone . . . and Messiah will rule the nations.

AS THE SEASONS CHANGE - JOB ONE REMAINS JOB ONE . . .

In the Haftarah readings this week - I Kings 2:1-12 - David is going to be preparing his son Solomon for the change of an era. The essential message is this: A new era is dawning. The era of Davidic worship and warfare is about to give way to a new the of exponentially expanding the Kingdom through wisdom and sowing the seeds of shalom!

The prophetic messages of the hour involve practical things the representatives of the expanding Kingdom of Heaven must do in order to assure that the torch of the Covenant is carried forth to all Kingdom-minded people the Holy One is presently rising up in the land.

First of all, as the essential prerequisite, David exhorts his beloved son:
. . Chazakta [be strong]! V’hayita l'ish [and show yourself a man]!
Diligently keep the charge of the Holy One Your God, to walk in His ways, and sh’mar [cherish and diligently guard and keep inviolate] His statutes, His commandments, His judgments and His testimonies, as it is written in the Torah of Moshe.

As you do this you will prosper in all you do and wherever you turn,
in order that the Holy One may establish his word that He spoke concerning me, saying, “If your children take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,
there shall not fail you (said he) a man on the throne of Yisra'el.”
[I Kings 2:2-4]

Torah is JOB ONE. All else flows from that assignment.

THE SEASON OF THE DIVINELY-INSPIRED DREAM AND VISION

This is the 10th week of the Annual Torah Cycle - the Week of Parsha MIketz. In the Haftarah [I Kings 3:15 -4:1], shortly after Sh’lomo assumed the throne of Israel – around 965 BCE - he had a dream. In the course of that dream, Sh’lomo heard the Holy One say: “Ask! What shall I give you?’

Contrary to what most theologians teach, what Sh’lomo asked for in response was not wisdom. He instead asked that the Holy One give him a lev shama - i.e. a sh’ma-ing [listening, attentive, hearing, responsive, obeying] heart in order that he might rule and dispense justice among the people of Israel.

A sh’ma-ing heart is far more precious and valuable than wisdom. After all, there are different kinds of wisdom, and what seems like wisdom to men is often not wise at all in the eyes of God. Indeed sometimes – as would be the case with Sh’lomo – what passes in human understanding as wisdom can actually work like serpent venom when injected into a sh’ma-ing heart.

Wisdom is not an end unto itself; wisdom is merely a natural outgrowth/fruit of a heart that sh'ma's the Voice and Words of the Holy One

It is week #8 of the annual Torah cycle. The reading from the prophets this week is the book of Obadiah.

Ovadiyah will prophecy how the descendants of Esav, who become the nation of Edom, will act very treacherously against the descendants of Avraham. You have read Genesis 12:1-3, I presume - so you know how that turns out for them, right?

Do not fear Esav, Edom, Antiochus Ephipanes, Herod, Nero, or for that matter any blustering, virtue-signalling, Hellenizing goon. Pity them, for they have no idea Who they are really up against.

The haftarah for the week of parsha Vayeitze is Hosea 12:13 – 14:10. The direct connection between the parsha hashavua and this passage in Hosea is made clear by the first verse, wherein the prophet reminds us: "Ya’akov fled to the land of Aram, and [there] Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he herded sheep." Hoshea 12:13.

The reference to Ya’akov’s time of exile serves as a launching pad from which the prophet passionately cause all of us who have played the prodigal like Ya'akov to make t’shuvah - i.e. return. The essence of the message from our Father is:

Shuvah Yisra'el ad Adonai Eloheicha
Return, Israel, to the Holy One your Lord;

ki chashalta b'avoneicha
you have stumbled because of your deviations from the path.

The dry bones/two stick vision sequence of Ezekiel 37 begins with Yad Adonai - i.e. the Hand (instrumentality of Creative Infusion and Guidance) of the Holy One. Always seek - and submit to - that first. Only those who lay down their own agendas (i.e. self-deny) and submit to the Hand of the Holy One are tasked with collecting the scattered fragments.

Year 5781 from Creation - what is it's substance? What is it's Script?

It all revolves around 'bones' - in Hebrew, etzmot. The script is introduced in the 50th chapter of Genesis, at verse 25. In that verse, Yosef told his brothers: “God will surely visit you, and you will carry up my bones from here.”

In the 37th chapter of Ezekiel, Yosef's prophetic utterance is viewed from a new, even more impactful perspective. When the Holy One visited Ezekiel He upped the ante, changing the 'what is to be done with these bones' issue from location of interment to requisites for resurrection and restoration. We will get to that in time. But in the meantime, remember these wise words from Solomon's masterpiece 'Mishlei' (Proverbs): "Pleasant words are like a honeycomb - sweetness to the soul and HEALTH TO THE BONES."

If resurrection and restoration are in the cards, it will start with the attitude, tone, vocabulary, and energizing positivity of the words of the Holy One's people. We must adopt the mindset and approach of Yosef - EXCELLENCE! ABSOLUTE, UNSHAKABLE FAITH IN THE GOODNESS OF OUR CREATOR AND HIS GRAND PLAN FOR REDEMPTION AND RESTORATION OF ALL THINGS, and FORGIVENESS OF ALL OFFENSES AGAINST US. We must become
a people of 'Pleasant words'.

What Says the Prophet for the week of Vayalech, 5780:

In order that we may know our assigned role in the Holy One’s great Plan of Redemption for Mankind and for the Restoration of Creation to its intended state of beauty, fruitfulness, and shalom, the prophet says:

Seek the Holy One while He may be found;
call upon Him while He is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way
and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the Holy One,
and He will have mercy on him;
and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
[Isaiah 55:6-7]

May it be! Let the seeking begin! Let calling upon Him spread from heart to heart, house to house, neighborhood to neighborhood, city to city, nation to nation, ethnic group to ethnic group, and continent to continent! THIS IS OUR ASSIGNED TASK FOR THIS HOUR!

These are the days of Awe! Let us forsake all the wicked ways that have seduced us into compromising our Covenant Relationship with the Holy One and its sweet Shalom. Let us forsake as well the polluted ways of thinking generated by our Fallen human minds.

Come, let us make t’shuvah like the prodigals we have been! Let us return to our ever merciful, ever loving, ever wise Father, Shepherd, Bridegroom and King!

For when we return to Him and to Torah after the great apostasy,
we will go out in joy, and be led forth in singing;
and all the trees of forest will clap their hands.

This is the 1st full week of our annual season of 'Dire Straits'. The parsha we live out this week before the world is parsha Pinchas. The Haftarah is I Kings 18:46 – 19:21. This is where we are supposed to learn what I call the 'Lesson of the Cave'.

This is the week we meditate upon the great character and spirituality challenges that Eliyahu faced in the aftermath of his confrontation with the prophets of Ba’al. After that incident, we are told, Yizavel – the queen of the Northern Kingdom and a supporter of the priests Eliyahu had ordered slain – vowed to end Eliyahu’s life. Eliyahu fled for his life. After 40 days and nights of flight southward, Eliyahu came to Mount Horev, where he hid in a cave - and, well . . . sulked. The Holy One was having none of it. He came to personally teach Eliyahu the 'lesson of the Cave'.

Until we too learn Eliyahu's great ‘lesson of the Cave’, our impact upon the world will, like Eliyahu in his Carmel days, be one of condemnation and death - instead of one of restoration, healing, deliverance, and abundant life as the Holy One has ordained. Class now in session!
