Dear Class of 2023 Parent/Guardian:

It’s hard to believe but our children have reached their senior year! One of the exciting events that the Seniors have been waiting for is Project Graduation. The students leave directly from their graduation at Bergen Academies and proceed to an undisclosed venue, where they spend the evening together and enjoy each other’s company for the last time as a class. The children will be bused to the venue and the event will end at approximately 1:00 AM. Students will then need to be picked up in the Bergen Tech Teterboro parking lot between 1:30-2:00 AM.

We are not sure of the total cost of the trip yet because we are hoping to have some successful fundraisers to help offset the cost of the venue and the buses. But we would like to start with a $100 deposit to secure your child’s spot for Project Graduation. Please remit this deposit by November 30, 2022. You can make the $100 deposit via the Memberhub site at https://bergentechppo.memberhub.com/store/items/810117

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at [email protected]

We will be having a Senior parent meeting in the school auditorium on November 30th at 7pm to answer any questions you may have and to discuss other Senior activities.

Thank you for your support in making this the best year for our kids!

Dear BT Parents:

Every year, the rising BT Seniors must find an internships for the entirety of the school year. As the coordinator of the Internship program at BT, it is my job to help each student locate an internship that interests them and that is a good fit between the student and the mentor. I usually begin this process in late April and continue until all students are placed. In majority of cases most of the students do enter the school year in September with an internship. The struggle at times is finding the right internship for the student. This past year was quite difficult especially given the fact that internships were fully virtual and many of the organizations and companies we had worked with in the past were unsure how they would be able to support a student virtually. Many companies still had no idea what they were doing themselves. I took to emailing different professors in different fields and I was able to make connections to many educational institutions that took on our students within the context of their field.

As we enter the month of April current Seniors will be attending internship in person if they choose to and their mentors have agreed and can accommodate them. As we look toward September, the district is envisioning that internships can remain virtual but also can be in-person. We have made many new connections with companies across the country and even across the world that have taken our students in as interns; therefore we want to nurture and keep these relationships going strong. This of course also gives students the opportunity to gage their comfort level in terms of attending in-person or remaining virtual for internships.

With all of this being said, I turn to you for assistance in helping me network new connections to individuals that you may know (or even yourself) that would be willing to host one of our students, whether virtual or in person. I have attached a simple letter that I normally send out to new mentors briefly explaining our program. Feel free to use this letter if you are aware of any potential opportunities that our students can take advantage of. Of course also feel free to email me directly at [email protected] with any contact information and I am more than happy to reach out.

I truly believe that the best way to network is to start within our own school community. If you are able to assist in anyway, both myself and the students would be quite appreciative. Thank you for taking the time to read this message and I look forward to hearing from you.

Attention Parents of Seniors! See Mr. Tankard's letter below about a special event for the Seniors on April 27th:

Dear Parents/Guardians, Students:
In our District’s effort to continuously raise awareness regarding mental health issues, we will be holding an event on Tuesday, April 27th, for all Senior students. This event, sponsored by the Bergen County Department of Mental Health, is being held in high schools throughout Bergen County from April 27th – 29th.

On Tuesday, April 27th, all District Seniors will be remaining remote for the school day and each of our four high schools will be airing the documentary, The Weight of Gold. This viewing will be followed by counselor-led, group discussions. This event will occur from 9:15 – 10:45 am on each campus.

The Weight of Gold is an HBO Sports documentary exploring the mental health challenges that Olympic athletes often face. The film seeks to inspire discussion about mental health issues, encourage people to seek help, and highlight the need for readily available support. It features accounts from Olympic athletes who share their own struggles with mental health issues, including Michael Phelps, Apolo Ohno, Shaun White, and Lolo Jones.

This documentary deals with the serious topics of depression, su***de and other mental health struggles. Due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter, it may be especially difficult for some students and families. Counselors will be leading the post-film discussion; however, we encourage you to speak with your child afterward about their reaction. Despite the deep issues dealt with in this documentary, we feel it is a powerful film that provides us the important opportunity to discuss the current mental health epidemic with our students.

If you have any concerns about your son/daughter watching this film, their reaction afterward, or their overall well-being, please reach out to your school’s counseling department.

Student Schedule Information on Tuesday, April 27, 2021:
Prior to viewing Weight of Gold, all Seniors are required to attend periods 1 and 2 remotely.
Students will have a break from then end of the Weight of Gold at 10:45 am until the start of period 7 at 11:07 am.
After viewing Weight of Gold and a short break, all Seniors are required to attend periods 7, 8, and 9 remotely.

As always, I would like to thank you for supporting the Bergen County School District’s ongoing mission to support the well-being and mental health of our entire community.
