It is such a pleasure to announce that Dr. Kailee Burdick, DNP, RN, CNE, CHSE, has recently been named the RHIC's new Associate Director of Education and Curriculum. Kailee has been an integral member of the RHIC team for nearly five years, most recently serving as our Clinical Simulation Specialist, and we are thrilled to see her step into this new leadership role.

Since joining RHIC in 2021, Dr. Burdick has been central to building and advancing our human simulation program — coordinating simulation planning and implementation, strengthening our standardized patient program, and advancing interprofessional curriculum across our simulation center. Her impact reflects a rare combination of expertise: a Doctor of Nursing Practice, dual national certifications as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE), years of academic faculty experience as a nursing educator, and more than a decade of clinical practice in critical and cardiac care. She is also an active scholar, with peer-reviewed publications, national conference presentations, and co-authored chapters in a nationally distributed nurse educator certification exam-prep text.

In her new role, Kailee will lead our Education and Curriculum efforts, providing strategic direction and day-to-day leadership for all simulation-based educational programming, curriculum development, and pedagogical quality across our nine partner institutions. She will guide our faculty and educator development efforts, advance our interprofessional education strategy, and serve as RHIC's primary point of expertise in simulation education — all in support of the learners and communities we serve throughout rural health.

This appointment reflects RHIC's ongoing commitment to educational excellence and to the growth of leaders from within our own community. Kailee's deep institutional knowledge, her dedication to our mission, and the trust she has earned across our partnerships make her exceptionally well-suited to carry this work forward.

Alaina Kaelber is one of the RHIC's outstanding American Heart Association CPR Instructors. She is also a paramedic and firefighter with Transcare Ambulance and the Honey Creek and Sugar Fire Departments.

Alaina was on the scene when her husband, Billy, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and thankfully was there to perform CPR on him until first responders arrived.

Billy survived and is doing well now, thanks to his wife's training and expertise. We could not be prouder of Alaina, who was recognized this week by the American Heart Association with the Heartsaver Hero Award. Here is her story!!

Alaina Kaelber, a paramedic and volunteer firefighter, was awarded the Heartsaver Hero Award for saving her husband’s life after he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest episode while on vacation.

In our continuing effort to support our community and our local EMS heroes, The RHIC is working with fire departments in the Wabash Valley to provide free community CPR classes and to support a fundraiser for a local firefighter who recently suffered cardiac arrest and was saved by the immediate administration of CPR. Donations collected at the events will help offset medical expenses and provide support for him and his family during his recovery. Please see the flyer for further details.
