Today we are learning how dinosaurs turned to stone.

We're also pretending to be paleontologists and sweep sand away to discover rocks and dinosaurs! This will be fun to revisit in the sand box when it warms up outside!

What do dinosaurs and arctic animals have in common? JANUARY

Dinosaurs are our theme for the month and we are having fun exploring everything prehistory.

And it is now winter so we are focusing on animals in winter. It helps that I lived 130 miles south of the Artic Circle for 14 years and have lots of stories.

Last Saturday we had Parent Appreciation Saturday. The children look forward to this each year. It is an opportunity for friends who left at the beginning of the school year to visit. It is a chance for parents to go Christmas Shopping or preparing for the Holidays, while children are busy with crafts, games, and play.

This year our participants ranged from 3 years to 7 years. We talked about growing things- an activity we were engaged in all summer! We looked at the Amaryllis bulb, which does not need to be fed and we looked at the Christmas Cactus which needs food and water.

Crafts included making wooden bead necklaces (not pictured here), ornaments for trees (also not pictured,) felt Christmas trees, paper chains, and lots of stenciled holiday shapes.

Children learn best through play. As a Montessori Teacher I set up the environment and let the child choose their activity. Once they demonstrate an interest then I build on that and extend their learning. Math and literacy skills can be developed in all areas of the classroom.

Many school age children return to math and literacy activities they learned in preschool to help them with homework.

During the fall and winter we spend at least 30 minutes in the morning and afternoon outside. If it is nice we will find was to extend our learning into the outdoors for longer periods of time.

If you are looking for before and after child care for school age children or preschool/childcare for younger children, give us a call. We have full and part-time rates. Not less than 3 days a week, and not more than 10 hours in a day.

We do accept State Subsidy.

School starts today and it is a time of reflection and change. Preschoolers are starting Kindergarten. The bean seeds we planted in early spring are producing like crazy. The baby chicks we picked up at the Post Office are now laying eggs. The Baby Hubbard Squash we decided to try trellising are getting bigger and bigger! And every day we have new Acorn squash showing up.

This summer we studied bees in our outdoor classroom, frogs, slugs, spiders and so much more. As we move into Fall we will spend a little more of our mornings indoors, but we will continue to learn in our outdoor classroom too!

We have room for preschoolers to join us in our adventures here at Julie’s Country Childcare. Preschool is currently Tuesday-Thursday, 830-1230. This includes morning snack and lunch. We have preschool only rates and full day (not to exceed 10 hours) rates. If there is enough interest we will add Monday to the preschool schedule! Check us out!

We also have openings for School Age children before and after school Monday through Friday. We spend as many afternoons as possible outside. When that is not possible we have games that focus on literacy and math skills as well as books, art, and more. Join us!

We accept Washington State Subsidy.

As part of our studying living things we decided to get chicks this Spring. The feed stores kept selling out too fast, so I ordered 10 chicks from a hatchery. They arrived on April 23rd. Noisy and cute.

We set them up with a heat source food and water. The children love watching them. It is surprising how much time we can spend watching them.

We lost two of those chicks to the stress of shipping. So a week later I was able to get six more chicks from a local feed store. Fourteen is a good number. It has been fun to compare the changes in chicks. The older chicks have a lot more visible feathers on their wings and they are twice as big! They grow fast.

We have been reviewing the hard workers "vowels" in the alphabet last week and this week. Today was the day for "e" and the soft sound it makes in egg, elephant, echo . . .

It seemed an appropriate time to play with egg dye. We played with time and how the length of time in the dye changed the color on the egg. There was some brave mixing; putting an already beautiful egg in another color to see what would happen! The results were all awesome.

This year as we study growing things and the life cycle of frogs, butterflies, turtles, chickens, and more we have added 16 pullets to our chicken yard. Our three 3-year old hens and our rooster weathered the winter, but we needed some more activity to watch and learn from.

This week has been an experience as we have watched them all establish a pecking order. The children have learned that chickens can be rude to each other, and sometimes the best option is to run away!
