This week in one our 2nd/3rd grade tutoring pods:

This week we will continue our dinosaur unit. I picked up several informative dinosaur books from the library that we will be using for our research. With that research, we will learn how to compare and contrast two dinosaurs of our choosing, will write a creative fiction story about what it would be like if we had a pet dinosaur and we will learn about the great extinction of the dinosaurs. In addition we will learn about the lifestyles of different dinosaurs and will complete the unit with a research assignment on any remaining questions we have about the dinosaur era. Lastly, this week we will learn all about the internal structure of a volcano while we continue to work our own volcanos and hopefully get to erupting them by the end of the week!

When you have a neurotypical child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like dances and weekend gatherings. They make the teams, auditions, organizations and clubs.

But when you have a child with certain differences, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. Despite their tremendous efforts, results are often a fraction of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and assignments a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parent and child alike.

This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness.

For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognize their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people.

Recognize that the "playing field" is not always a level surface.

Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: To be accepted!!

At Ivy Prep Learning Pod we incorporate each subject into our exciting curriculum! Each week is themed and consists of art projects, writing prompts, science experiments, math/Stem work, and yoga classes all relating to the theme of the week. We love to brainstorm ideas and study subjects that interest us! Each student adds something to our pod that collectively makes it a unique and fun learning environment. We are currently looking to bring in a few more students to join our pod. If you are interested reach out!

Our pods are themed around topic areas and integrate writing, reading and STEM into all our themes to encourage and challenge our students in their ongoing education and development.
