🌟 Understanding the Stages of Play in Child Development 🌟
Did you know that play isn’t just fun for kids — it’s a powerful way they learn about the world? From the earliest days, play evolves through different stages, each building important skills for life.
👶 Functional Play (Sensorimotor Play)
This is the first type of play we see in babies and toddlers — think shaking rattles, stacking blocks, or splashing water. It's all about exploring the senses and discovering how things work. It’s repetitive, fun, and crucial for brain development!
🎭 Pretend Play (Symbolic/Imaginative Play)
Around age 2-3, you'll start seeing more imaginative play — pretending to cook, talking on a toy phone, or roaring like a dinosaur. This kind of play helps kids understand emotions, practice social roles, and develop language.
🧩 Constructive Play
Building with blocks, drawing pictures, or doing puzzles — this stage involves creating something and brings together thinking and motor skills. It also helps with problem-solving and planning.
🤝 Social and Cooperative Play
As kids grow, play becomes more interactive. They learn to take turns, share ideas, and work together toward common goals — skills they’ll use for a lifetime.
🌱 Every stage of play is meaningful — it’s how children process their experiences and grow into confident, creative, and connected people.
So next time you see a child “just playing,” remember: they’re doing important work! 💪🎨🧠

🗓✨ Using Visual Schedules in Speech Therapy! ✨🗓
One of the tools I love using in my speech therapy sessions is a visual schedule — and here’s why!
Visual schedules help:
✅ Set clear expectations
✅ Reduce anxiety and improve transitions
✅ Increase independence and participation
✅ Keep sessions structured and predictable
Whether I’m working with little ones or older students, a visual schedule gives them a "roadmap" of what we’re doing that day — from greetings and warm-ups to fun activities and wrap-up. It's especially helpful for children with autism, ADHD, or those who simply thrive on routine.
Sometimes it’s pictures, sometimes words — or both! Whatever works best for the child.
Do you use visual schedules at home or in your classroom? I'd love to hear how they've helped your kiddos! 💬👇

🌟 Using Core Vocabulary in Speech Therapy 🌟
One of the most powerful tools we use in speech therapy is core vocabulary — a small set of words that make up the majority of what we say every day. Words like go, stop, more, help, want, on, off, turn, open, and like are incredibly versatile and can be used across so many situations.
By teaching and modeling these words, children can start communicating in meaningful ways quickly, whether they’re talking, signing, or using AAC devices. Instead of focusing only on labeling (like “dog” or “car”), core vocabulary empowers kids to express their wants, needs, feelings, and ideas in any setting.
✨ Example: Instead of just labeling “cookie,” a child can say want cookie, more cookie, stop cookie, like cookie, or even help cookie!
Core words = communication that is flexible, powerful, and functional. 💬

💬 Using AAC at Home: Modeling Makes a Difference 💬
Parents — if your child uses an AAC device or board to communicate, one of the most helpful things you can do is model language on it during everyday routines.
And don’t worry — it doesn’t have to be perfect. ❤️
You can model just a few simple words during snack time and play. You can point to words as you speak. No pressure for my child to use the words — just showing how they work.
Here’s what helps:✅ Use the AAC as you talk — even one word at a time.✅ Keep it natural — during play, meals, or reading.✅ Be patient — language takes time to grow.
Every time we model, we’re building a foundation for communication, connection, and confidence. You're not alone on this journey — and every small step counts. 💙

✨ Why We Love Visual Supports in Speech Therapy ✨
In our speech therapy sessions, we use visual supports like pictures, symbols, and written cues to help clients better understand and remember what we’re working on. 🖼️✏️
Visual supports can:
✅ Make abstract concepts easier to understand
✅ Provide a clear reminder of expectations or steps
✅ Reduce frustration and increase independence
✅ Support both comprehension and expression
From picture schedules to choice boards, these tools give our clients the confidence to communicate and succeed — and they work for all ages! 💬💡
Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to follow directions with a visual checklist? Imagine how powerful that can be for communication growth! 💙

🧠✨ Sensory Supports & Regulation in Speech Therapy ✨🧠
Did you know that helping children feel regulated can make speech therapy sessions more effective and enjoyable?
When a child’s sensory needs are met—whether through movement, calming tools, or sensory-friendly environments—they’re more ready to focus, engage, and communicate. 💬💪
Here are a few simple sensory supports that can enhance speech and language sessions:
🚶♂️Movement breaks to release energy and boost focus
🧸Fidget tools to keep hands busy and brains attentive
🎧Noise-canceling headphones or soft background music to reduce overwhelm
💆♀️Deep pressure (like a weighted lap pad) to promote calm and body awareness
🪑Alternative seating like wobble stools or floor cushions to support regulation
🌈 Swings – Rhythmic swinging can have a calming or alerting effect, depending on the child’s needs. It helps with vestibular input, body awareness, and emotional regulation—all of which can set the stage for more engaged and meaningful speech work. Swings can also be a motivating space for practicing language in a fun and natural way!
Speech and language growth doesn’t happen in isolation—it thrives when the whole child is supported. Let’s meet kids where they are and help them feel safe, calm, and ready to connect. 💛

🖐 Why is my child’s speech therapist using Play-Doh, kinetic sand, or fidget toys? 🗣
Speech therapy isn’t just talking—sometimes it’s hands-on! Fine motor sensory items help kids stay engaged, regulate their bodies, and learn through play.
A speech therapist might use these tools to:
🎯 Hide picture cards or objects in kinetic sand to target new vocabulary or speech sounds.
🎯 Roll Play-Doh into shapes while practicing following directions.
🎯 Use tweezers to pick up small items, pairing each turn with a turn-taking phrase like “My turn/Your turn.”
By engaging the hands, we also engage the mind—making it easier for children to focus, interact, and communicate. And yes… it’s a LOT of fun too! 💬✨

🎨❄️ Snow + Food Dye = Winter Speech Therapy Fun! 🗣️⛄️
Looking for a creative way to build speech and language skills during the winter? Try using food dye on snow—a colorful, hands-on activity that targets SO many areas of development!
Here’s what you can work on:
✅ Following directions – “Put red on the big snowball,” or “Spray blue, then yellow!”
✅ Color concepts – Great for learning and labeling primary and secondary colors.
✅ Descriptive language – Is it bright? Melting? Swirly? So many ways to describe!
✅ Vocabulary building – Snow, sq**rt, mix, drip, dye… you name it!
✅ Prepositions – “On top,” “under,” “next to”—spatial words come to life!
✅ Requesting & commenting – “I want more blue!” “Wow, it turned purple!”
✅ Articulation practice – Pair it with target sounds (e.g., “Spray the /s/ snowman!”)
🌈 Kids love the sensory aspect, and it’s easy to adapt for all ages and goals. All you need is snow, spray bottles or droppers, water + food coloring… and imagination!
❄️ Who says speech therapy can’t be magical?
