WHAT WE OFFER

FAMILY SUSTAINABILITY STAY
An educational vacation for all ages. For families that want to: provide for more of their basic needs, learn low-tech, low-cost ways to simplify life, or just do meaningful activities outdoors. TRADITIONAL FOLK ARTS AND INDIGENOUS CRAFT CLASSES
One- to two-day classes which focus on a specific skill such as brown ash bask

etry, moccasin sewing, or hide tanning. Classes include delicious meals made from local food. SCHOOL PROGRAMS
From an hour to a day, on-site or in the classroom, these programs are designed to get students excited about the gifts of the earth while teaching about sustainability, wilderness crafts, and natural history. Programs may involve an interactive show-and-tell, building shelters in the woods, grinding cornmeal, starting a fire with the bow drill, local foods, brewing wild tea, making string from plant fiber, carving a spoon, and more. HOMESCHOOL PROGRAMS
These monthly classes share with kids and their families, earth-based activities that connect people to the land throughout the year. Each class incorporates song, stories, a local wild or domestic food, and a craft or skill. Ultimately, we strive to create a “community in the woods” in which parents and students work and learn together. APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
Apprentices live at Koviashuvik for an extended period of time during which they are involved with all the elements of this life. Apprentices learn to cook with wood, build with stone, get water from the spring, tend the garden, gather wild edibles in season, and craft useful everyday items such as a pack- basket, knife, or moccasins. Apprentices attend any Koviashuvik classes that take place during their stay. In exchange for learning, apprentices work several days each week on whatever projects we are doing. Often the work and learning blend together. We welcome people of all skill levels and ages.

Sprouting Forest Seeds!

Dear Friends,

Some thoughts about the what and the why of our video project:

First, we extend our hearts to you in whatever hardship and struggle the pandemic has brought. Peace and health be with you. As the world around us is reshaped by the presence of Covid-19, we at Koviashuvik have been asking ourselves how to be most of service during this crisis. We know that all of you with children find yourselves home with your kids everyday, all day, and no prospect of play-dates or trips to the library in sight!

As outdoor educators, we realized that one thing that would help many families at this moment in time would be to share activities and skills that get us outside, connecting with and learning from, the living earth. We are creating a series of short videos to help do that!

While we all struggle to make sense of the new normal, the earth is going about her glorious transition from winter to spring. Today the sap is flowing in the maples, two weeks from now pure sap water will be flowing from the birch. Around that time, the first coltsfoot flowers will bloom and we can gather them and add their tasty mineral goodness to salads. We have heard geese overhead and the basswood buds are swelling, offering a tasty nibble. There are twigs in the forest to be gathered, fires to be made and adventures to be had roasting apples outside, or maybe making bread-on-a-stick. If you live in oak country, last fall’s abundance of acorn is likely still on the ground and ready for a spring harvesting and then the engaging work of transforming bitter acorn into sweet pancakes.

We hope that the videos are useful right now, in this moment that we need activities to do with our children. We also believe that their value extends beyond crisis mitigation. The skills are a means to food, medicine, fiber, and the joy and pride that come from practices of self-reliance. In sum, these films represent one small facet of the great turning that is so needed to bring the human community back into alignment with the earth community

We hope you enjoy the videos, please use them as a catalyst and a means to your earth-based adventures, not as an end. Feel free to share them, and please, give us a call, send an email, ask questions, and share your experiences.

In solidarity with you and all those envisioning a more beautiful world,

The Knapp Family.
