Kate DiCamillo’s stories have long inspired readers sharing stories of bravery, humility, kindness, and love. While this class might feel like a cozy book club, we will incorporate a variety of her classic novels as the spine to teach language arts, including grammar, writing, spelling, vocabulary, and close reading. We will meet weekly to discuss our readings, work on writing and lessons, and learn how to become strong readers and writers. Students will have reading and writing assignments to complete during the week. My goal is to inspire a love of reading and writing while laying the foundation for academic success. We will read The Tale of Despereaux, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tiger Rising, The Magician’s Elephant, and Flora and Ulysses. Students will each need a copy of each book, a notebook for writing, their favorite pens and pencils, and a folder. Cost is $85/mo. We meet each Thursday, from 1:00-2:30, from August 16-November 17 and then from January 12-April 13. This class is appropriate for upper elementary students in grades 4-6. This class is taught by Heather Chandler, who has a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies with a focus in English and Rhetoric. Heather has over 20 years of teaching experience, including homeschooling her five children and teaching at the local college.

Join us for this early elementary poetry class where we will read good poetry and enjoy tea and snacks. In Tea and Poetry, students will explore different genres of poetry,
write their poetry, memorize and recite poetry, and participate in activities that will help students grow their appreciation for all styles of poetry. We will start the class by having a large group meeting where we will have refreshments and read the day’s selected poetry. After reading and discussing the poetry selections we will break into centers where the children will work on different literary skills such as reading aloud to one
another, writing their own poems, illustrating poetry, and working on spelling and vocabulary. Sweetened tea, lemonade, juice, and snacks will be served every week so
please let the instructor know if your child has any food allergies.
This class, taught by Sarah Stroup, who has a Master's Degree in Education in Advanced Literacy Instruction, is
offered to students in grades K-2. Classes will meet every Tuesday from 1-2:30 pm. There will be a one-time $30 supply fee and the price of the class is $85 a month. Only 8 spots will be available so sign up today! The class will run from August through November.

Need a high school English Composition class for your student? Classes will begin in August, and we are beginning to take registrations. Email us at [email protected] for more information! Classes will be held in Temple.

Course Description:
This course is designed to help students write effectively for both college and the workplace. We will use a variety of texts and critical approaches to provide both practice and models for essay writing, including strategies, structure, and research methods. Our focus will include grammar, vocabulary, analysis, rhetoric, and MLA citations. Students will compose academic paragraphs, argumentative essays, a research paper, critical analysis, a business letter, and a PowerPoint presentation.

While all of this meets the standard criteria for any good English course, our approach breaks from tradition. There are rarely worksheets, and we do not diagram sentences. We merge popular culture with the canon, comparing pop music with classic poetry, asking ourselves what is art, and how are the classics still relevant? Our readings include top picks for high school classes and a few modern texts from today’s bestsellers. Our discussions are Socratic, dynamic, and thought-provoking. We analyze the rhetoric in important speeches but also in our headlines. We learn to discern scholarly sources from satire and questionable sources. We create, practice, and leave room to inspire our individual interests. This is not the stuffy English class some fear, and you won’t find red marks all over your papers. You will have lots of feedback on what you are doing well and areas you can improve. You will be challenged to support your arguments and to clarify your position. You will be introduced to new ideas, and you might find yourself contemplating hard issues. But you will quickly realize that English is a tool for you to explore the world around you and to communicate effectively. Language changes the world. Let’s learn to use it wisely.

Our class will meet once a week for 90 minutes, but we will also have a class blog to continue our discussions, ask questions, and share other information throughout the week. Parents are always welcome to check-in and see what the students are learning. Cost is $100/month or $375/semester. Class meets Aug-April, Tuesday afternoons from 1:00-2:30. No classes are held in December.

Heather Chandler is the instructor for this class. She has a Master's degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in rhetoric and English. She has homeschooled her five children and also teaches English classes at Temple College and Texas A&M University-Central Texas.
