Most people spend their entire lives copying what already works.

They copy the techniques.
They copy the systems.
They copy the businesses.
They copy the training methods.
They copy the champions.

And then they wonder why they get average results.

The truth is simple:

If everyone is doing the same thing, there is no advantage left.

Success isn’t found in blindly following the crowd. Success is found in understanding WHY things work, asking better questions, and having the courage to explore paths others are too afraid to take.

Most people copy outcomes.

Few people study processes.

The crowd sees a champion’s result and immediately imitates it. The innovators study the principles behind the result. That’s where the real value is.

Growth requires curiosity.

It requires being willing to challenge assumptions.

It requires being comfortable looking foolish before looking brilliant.

Every major breakthrough in history started with someone questioning what everyone else accepted as truth.

The people who change industries.
The people who build great academies.
The people who lead movements.
The people who leave a legacy.

They don’t follow the crowd.

They understand the crowd.

Then they go somewhere different.

Whether it’s in Jiu-Jitsu, business, leadership, or life, the goal shouldn’t be to fit in.

The goal should be to create something worth following.

Stay curious.
Keep questioning.
Experiment.
Test.
Learn.
Adapt.
Repeat.

Because average is where the crowd gathers.

And greatness has never lived there.

What’s one belief you’ve changed your mind about in the last few years? 👇

GI vs NoGi is one of the dumbest debates in Jiu-Jitsu!

I spent most of my life training in the gi. Thousands of hours gripping sleeves, collars, lapels, and pant legs. Then I built a successful NoGi team and, at one point, I couldn’t stand the gi anymore!

My hands hurt!

My fingers hurt!

My wrists hurt!

And if we’re being honest, some of the most boring matches in Jiu-Jitsu happen in the gi. Grip. Hold. Stall. Repeat.

What always drove me crazy was the argument that the gi is automatically more technical because it has more grips.

More grips does NOT automatically equal more technical!

More options don’t automatically create more skill!

In my experience, NoGi exposes weaknesses faster.

Bad posture? Punished!

Bad wrestling? Punished!

Bad movement? Punished!

Bad transitions? Punished!

Everything happens immediately!

And yes, I believe there are more things you can get away with in the gi than in NoGi. The gi can often hide poor movement, poor wrestling, poor scrambling, and bad habits for longer because the grips and friction allow you to slow everything down.

Before the gi crowd loses their minds, I’m not saying the gi is worse!

I’m saying it’s DIFFERENT!

Different constraints!

Different problems!

Different solutions!

Then there’s the classic argument:

“But NoGi guys just use sweat to escape!”

Sure. Sometimes!

But the same people never seem to mention all the advantages that friction creates in the gi. Funny how that works.

The reality is that most people aren’t defending facts.

They’re defending their tribe.

Team Gi!

Team NoGi!

Meanwhile, the best grapplers in the world are too busy training to care.

Here’s my take:

If taking the gi off destroys your Jiu-Jitsu, that’s a problem.

If putting the gi on destroys your Jiu-Jitsu, that’s also a problem.

Real skill transfers!

Real understanding transfers!

Real grapplers solve problems regardless of what they’re wearing!

The jacket was never the point.

The rashguard was never the point.

The point was always JIU-JITSU!

Train gi!

Train NoGi!

Train both!

And for the love of God…

SHUT UP AND TRAIN!

What’s your hottest Gi vs NoGi take? 👇🔥

Most people don’t quit Jiu-Jitsu because they get old.

They get old because they stop taking care of themselves.

After more than 30 years on the mats, I’ve learned that longevity isn’t about being the toughest person in the room. It’s about making smart decisions consistently.

Too many people try to win every round.

They refuse to tap.
They ignore recovery.
They train through injuries.
They let their ego dictate their training.

Then years later they wonder why their body is breaking down.

The athletes who stay on the mats the longest do things differently.

✅ They stop trying to win practice.
✅ They tap early.
✅ They become more technical.
✅ They strength train.
✅ They prioritize mobility.
✅ They recover hard.
✅ They choose training partners wisely.
✅ They leave their ego at the door.

The goal isn’t to train like you’re 20 forever.

The goal is to still be training when you’re 50, 60, and 70.

As athleticism fades, timing improves.

As speed slows down, efficiency increases.

As strength decreases, strategy develops.

What you lose physically can often be replaced with experience, skill, and understanding.

That’s why experience is a superpower.

Jiu-Jitsu isn’t a sprint.

It’s a lifelong journey.

Train smart.
Train consistently.
Stay healthy.
Keep learning.
Keep evolving.

Because the goal isn’t surviving today’s training session.

The goal is continuing to improve year after year.

The people who get the most out of Jiu-Jitsu aren’t always the strongest, fastest, or most talented.

They’re the ones who simply keep showing up.

Week after week.
Month after month.
Year after year.

Who’s planning on training for life? 👇🔥

Everyone wants the secret to becoming great at Jiu-Jitsu.

The newest technique.
The latest instructional.
The perfect system.

But what if the answer isn’t more techniques?

What if the answer is better training?

One of the biggest mistakes coaches make is treating every part of training like it’s supposed to accomplish the same goal.

Games.
Scrimmages.
Sparring.

They’re not the same thing.

And that’s exactly why they’re all valuable.

Broad games teach exploration.

Athletes learn what matters.

They discover problems, opportunities, threats, and solutions without being spoon-fed answers.

Narrow games create focus.

The athlete begins to recognize patterns and develop more reliable actions.

Scrimmages build mastery.

Now we’re repeatedly exposing athletes to the most important positions and problems they need to solve.

Not once.

Not twice.

Hundreds of times.

Then we reconnect everything back to the whole game through open sparring.

This is where many coaches get it wrong.

They either make everything a game.

Or everything a scrimmage.

Or everything open sparring.

The best training environments understand that learning exists on a spectrum.

Exploration.

Focus.

Mastery.

Adaptability.

Transfer.

Every training tool has a purpose.

The future of Jiu-Jitsu isn’t traditional training versus Ecological Dynamics.

It isn’t Danaher versus CLA.

It isn’t instruction versus games.

The future belongs to coaches who understand HOW people learn.

The future belongs to coaches who understand when to use each training tool.

The future belongs to athletes who spend less time memorizing techniques and more time solving problems.

Because at the end of the day…

The game teaches the game.

Scrimmages build mastery.

And together they create athletes who can actually perform when it matters most.

If you’re a coach, what’s your current balance between games, scrimmages, and open sparring?

STOP MEMORIZING ESCAPES! START UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM!

One of the biggest problems in Jiu-Jitsu is how submission escapes are taught. Most athletes are shown a clean sequence of steps in a perfect situation… then everything falls apart the second resistance increases.

Because real escapes are NOT clean.

They’re chaotic.
Pressure based.
Timing based.
Perception based.

That’s why I prefer teaching escapes through CLA and Ecological Dynamics by REVERSE ENGINEERING the problem from the END first.

Start where the danger is highest.
Start where the athlete can actually FEEL the submission working.

What creates the submission?
What increases the danger?
What buys time?
What removes pressure?
What makes things worse?

That’s the information athletes actually need.

Instead of memorizing “step 1, step 2, step 3,” athletes begin learning how to survive, adapt, and solve problems under pressure.

When we start athletes late in armbars, triangles, heel hooks, or chokes, the environment begins shaping behavior naturally.

They start discovering:
• Frames
• Hand fighting
• Elbow line recovery
• Hip movement
• Timing windows
• Pressure management
• Defensive posture

Not because they memorized them…
Because the PROBLEM demanded them.

That’s representative learning.
The game teaches the game.

And the learning becomes reciprocal:
The attacker learns how to finish under resistance.
The defender learns how to survive under pressure.

Both athletes adapt.
Both athletes improve.

That interaction IS skill development.

Most traditional escape systems fail because athletes learned a SCRIPT instead of learning the ENVIRONMENT.

Real escapes are messy.
Real escapes require adaptation.
Real escapes require awareness.

Don’t just teach “the escape.”
Teach athletes how to understand the PROBLEM.

Learn the danger.
Manage the danger.
Escape the danger.

THE BURDEN OF PROOF MATTERS!

One of the biggest problems in Jiu-Jitsu and coaching today is people speaking confidently about things they DO NOT understand!

Especially when it comes to CLA and Ecological Dynamics!

Everybody suddenly becomes an “expert” after hearing a podcast clip, watching a reel, or reading a few comments online. Then they start making ridiculous assumptions:
“CLA doesn’t work.”
“Games aren’t real training.”
“This isn’t how champions are built.”
“Ecological Dynamics is fake science.”

But here’s the problem…

Most of these people cannot even define:

* representative learning,
* perception-action coupling,
* affordances,
* self-organization,
* nonlinear pedagogy,
* or repetition without repetition!

They attack concepts they’ve never deeply studied!

That’s where the burden of proof matters!

If YOU make the claim…
YOU must prove it!

Not with feelings.
Not with gym folklore.
Not with emotional reactions.
Not with “well my coach said…”

With REAL evidence!
REAL understanding!
REAL testing!
REAL application!
REAL results!

The funniest part about all of this is that many critics create completely fake versions of CLA in their own heads and then attack those fake versions:
“CLA means no technique!”
False.
“CLA is random!”
False.
“CLA means no coaching!”
False.

They argue against things CLA never even claimed!

Meanwhile, athletes developed through representative training environments continue showing:

* adaptability,
* timing,
* decision making,
* creativity,
* resilience,
* and real transfer to competition.

Again.
And again.
And again.

The game teaches the game!

Reality teaches reality!

Not robotic memorization detached from live interaction!

At the end of the day, many people don’t hate CLA because it “doesn’t work.”

They hate it because it challenges outdated beliefs, coaching identities, and traditional authority structures.

And instead of studying it…
they mock it.

Instead of testing it…
they dismiss it.

Instead of understanding it…
they attack it.

Talk is easy.
Results aren’t.
