French now has 396 million speakers worldwide according to a 2026 report. That puts it in fourth place globally, ahead of Arabic and behind Mandarin, English, and Spanish. Most people still underestimate just how far the language actually reaches.

The jump from 321 million in 2022 is not just about growth. For the first time, the data includes children aged 6 to 9 studying in French in countries where it is used in schools. That shift alone changes how we see the real footprint of the language.

A lot of this momentum is coming from Africa, where French is part of daily life in business, education, and government. In many cities, it is not treated as a second language at all. It is simply the language people use to get things done.

If you are used to hearing French only in Paris or a few parts of Europe, this puts things into perspective. The language is expanding in places most travelers do not think about, and that is where its future is being shaped.

Applications are now open for the Lafayette Fellowship—a distinguished new graduate scholarship program in France for tomorrow's leaders, offered by the French Embassy in the United States.

Launching on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence and celebrating French-American friendship, the Lafayette Fellowship will support up to 30 outstanding American students for one year of master’s-level study at leading French institutions.

The fellowship is open to both Francophone and non-Francophone candidates, with partner institutions offering programs spanning STEM fields, humanities, social sciences, and the arts, available in both French and English.

Beyond academic studies, fellows will participate in the French-American Leadership Program, which offers comprehensive immersion into European innovation, culture, and policy, and provides mentorship through a prestigious international network.

Congratulations to this year's Judith Radke study abroad scholarship recipients Cade Januszewski and D'Angelo Perez.
These awards were made possible by and named after our former colleague in French Professor Judith Radke who passed away in 2008. For many years until her retirement, Professor Radke taught French language and literature at ASU. Both Cade and D'Angelo will use their scholarship towards their trip to Lyon for the study abroad French program to take place this coming June. Félicitations à vous deux !
