GWA stands in solidarity with the University of Arizona community! After such a horrific event, everyone needs time and space to grieve. 💕
Our University of Arizona community is not okay. Less than 24 hours after our colleague and teacher, Professor Meixner, was murdered on campus, we are required to return to work and resume our teaching and mentoring as if nothing happened. This callous treatment leaves us feeling that the UA views its workers as expendable. Much of the last 2 years has sent us this same message–furloughs, layoffs, defunding, and lack of support for Black students (with recent events amplifying our concerns)—all while we poured our hearts and souls into our teaching, learning, and community. Our administrators ask us to seek help from our incredible counseling teams, but fail to understand that these teams are significantly underfunded, understaffed and overworked.
As workers, we must organize to ensure our own protection, safety, and well-being. As members of the UCWAZ union, we commit ourselves to being there for one another, and for everyone in the campus community at large. We grieve this horrendous loss together.
