Brilliant review by James Ungureanu of Peter Harrison’s new book, “Some New World: Myths of Supernatural Belief in a Secular Age” (Cambridge University Press, 2024). A doctoral student of Harrison, Dr. Ungureanu is an historian of science and religion and a scholar with broad reading and knowledge in the humanities and sciences. He spoke at both the 2021 and 2022 COFAS - Conference on Faith and Science sponsored by the Arizona Center for Christian Studies. I appreciate his highlighting “The Abolition of Man” by C. S. Lewis, which was a thematic reading for COFAS in 2022.

As Lewis warned, if we persist in the Baconian fantasy of control, we will not simply lose our souls—we will abolish our very humanity. The antidote to this fate is not more knowledge, nor more power, but a recovery of wisdom. A wisdom that sees creation not as raw material to be conquered, but as a gift to be received. A wisdom that understands that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. A wisdom that knows, with Augustine, that our hearts are restless until they rest in him.

One of our favorite videos from COFAS - Conference on Faith and Science (Feb. 2021) is a 3-minute talk by Prof. William Phillips. He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1997 for his work on laser cooling. At a press conference, Prof. Phillips stated, “‘I need to thank a lot of people, but I want to begin by thanking God for giving us such an amazing world in which we can explore and have fun.’ And that simple statement marked me as the religious Nobel Laureate. A guy who reconciles his faith and his science, a guy who believes in God in a really personal way, a God who sustains me and comforts me, and accompanies me every moment of my life.”

We hosted the COFAS - Conference on Faith and Science entirely online in February 2021. More than 30 leading Christians in science from the U.S. and U.K. spoke about how they were both friends of science and friends of faith. They were introduced by Christian professors at Arizona State University and other universities in Arizona. So there were 60+ professors discussing how their Christian faith is compatible with their science. Although 1,250 people from around the world joined us online for the live conference, far fewer have seen the videos on the COFAS ASU YouTube channel. So we will begin to post some of these videos. The next online event hosted by the Affiliation of Christian Biologists (ACB) is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9 at 7:30-9:00 pm EDT (4:30-6:00 pm PDT)! Our guest speaker, Katharine Hayhoe, will speak on “Christians, Climate, and Our Culture Around the World.” Dr. Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on understanding the impacts of climate change on people and the planet. She is a distinguished professor and chair at Texas Tech University, and chief scientist for The Nature Conservancy. She is also the author of the book “Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World.”
At its core, climate change is profoundly unjust. It exacerbates hunger, poverty, and even political instability, disproportionally impacting the most vulnerable people of the world, the very ones we Christians are called to love and care for. As the scientific evidence builds, however, so does the opposition to solutions: they’re impractical, or they’ll harm people, or they’re even too late, some argue. Why is climate change such a difficult problem to solve, and what can we as Christians do about it? Join Katharine Hayhoe as she untangles the complex science behind global warming and highlights the key role our faith and values play in shaping our attitudes and actions on this crucial topic.
