This year’s winner for Indigenous Culture Week artwork is Alaina Tesarek! ✨
“The artwork depicts two indigenous people, one woman wearing a Navajo tsiiyééł and the other with her hair down, both wrapped in a Pendleton blanket. The border is a braid of sweetgrass, united at the center with a sun. The two women wrapped in the same blanket represent unification between indigenous people. This being represented by their differing hairstyles and hair color. It could be interpreted as the traditional being united with the contemporary native styles. Another aspect of the artwork that signifies unification is the braid of sweetgrass wrapping around the imagery of the women joining at the center with a sun. This shows the indigenous community united under the one sun.”
Again, we’d like to thank all artists for their beautiful and amazing artwork! ❤️

Another big thank you to the artists who submitted their artwork for this years Indigenous Culture Week! Learn more about Christopher and their artwork below! ✨
Christopher Murphy
“This design is a digital art piece that showcases a version of a customized sneaker that I have painted recently. The design displays two cultures coming together from their respective art form pottery and basketry. The red clay style pottery design is made by the Piiposh people and basket art is made by then O’odham people who are well known for their intricate craft and unique styles.
The two united tribes are located on both the Salt River community the Gila River community.
The background fields and mountain range is common in both areas, which most people feel is an iconic image that represents their home.”
