Today we honor Warlance Chee (Navajo). Warlance is co-founder, teacher and advocate of creating first language Diné bizaad (Navajo language) speakers through a non-profit school Saad K’idilyé. Under his leadership, Saad K’idilyé provides a language-nest model: immersive full‐Diné language environments for prenatal families, infants, toddlers (and expanding). The nest uses culturally grounded concepts: the cornfield, the mountains, the hogan (traditional dwelling) as metaphors/tools for child growth & development, planning, root/growth. Warlance emphasizes urgency: “There is no time to waste” in producing first‐language speakers, because many children are already exposed heavily to English by 6-8 months. Saad K’idilyé offers Diné parents, grandparents and families the access to their language.
