I got the best message from a parent today. We just finished Barton book 4. This kiddo works hard and always comes to his zoom session with a smile. I’m so proud of all he has accomplished. 💕

After completing level 4 of the Barton Reading and Spelling System, Susan Barton recommends adding in writing lessons from IEW. As I followed this recommendation with my daughter, I fell in love with the ease of the Structure and Style method provided by the Institute for Excellence in Writing. IEW provides a prefect "easy +1" method to help build confidence while learning to write creatively. IEW lessons follows 9 units: note taking, writing paragraphs, stories, simple reports, writing from pictures, research reports, creative writing, essays, and critiques. These units build on each other, while adding stylistic techniques, and can be repeated year after year using different source texts as the child grows into a more sophisticated reader and writer. In second grade my daughter was unable to decode even basic words on her own, despite my background in teaching phonics and her intrinsic motivation to learn to read.
Since she didn’t qualify for services through our charter school I started using The Barton Reading and Spelling Program with her at home.
I fell in love with the structure of the Barton program, and decided I wanted to help other busy parents teach their struggling students learn to read.
I am now a certified Barton tutor and enjoy working with students in person and online!
