In honor of our science and Montessori focus this week, I’m sharing a few favorite classroom moments from years past. These little comments are a reminder that children are always making connections, asking questions, and keeping us smiling along the way.
1. All month we have been following the life cycle of the butterfly in class and anxiously awaiting each stage along the way. Watching the miracle of metamorphosis in our classroom has been a great science experience and a lesson in patience as well.
One day some of the girls were gathered around the chrysalides and I overheard them saying “Oh I hope they are girls!”
2. This week I was reviewing some social studies and science topics from previous months. I asked the children if they remembered where the President of the United States lives. One little girl confidently answered, “In a stable?”
I think we may have mixed up a few lessons along the way!

Practical Life lessons often lead to some of the sweetest and funniest moments in our classroom. Here are a some favorites from over the years.
1. This week, I introduced the Snapping Frame, a Practical Life lesson in the Montessori classroom that helps children learn how to fasten and unfasten snaps, to a three-year-old little girl.
I began by naming the lesson and asked her if she had ever practiced snapping before.
She nodded yes, held up her little hand, tried her very best to snap her fingers, and said,
“Well, I just makes a little sound.”
2. This month, we have a table-setting activity in the classroom. The purpose of the lesson is to build a Practical Life skill...learning how to properly set the table.
After I finished introducing the activity to a small group of children, one little girl looked completely unimpressed and said,
“We mostly eat on the couch.”
